What an unusual and pleasing choice of paintings.
Luis has created images that really speak to those who will listen and the messages will all be different. Other works I have seen based upon photographic images tend to be limp and lifeless because all the artist has done is wield the brush. Luis has put his stamp upon the photographers' art and made it his own.
I sense that Luis has an inquisitive mind and that, like me, he has many questions in his life for which he seeks the answers. His landscapes have that feeling of the first step of a journey. Not only do they draw the viewer into the frame by their simple composition, they also create the desire to know what is just over the horizon or just around that bend.
Although there are no barriers in the pictures, the impression I get is that "so far, and no further" was the ruling sentiment when the photograph was taken while the artist has asked "why did you stop here?"
The self-portraits reveal, possibly, more than Luis might have intended but that is the danger of self portraits. 'Alter-ego' gives me the impression that Luis would rather be a more robust character, himself, or have a best friend who would help him to keep his feet on the ground.
I am very pleased that Luis has allowed me to see these great works and for them to work their magic upon my own sensibilities.
Thank you Louis.
