Greetings All,
Thank you Ibo, for the reference to these great tools for users of MS Windows PC's. Considering the impact that Windows has had on the computing community at large for around 15 years or so, you would think that they would have a GREAT firewall AND anti-virus included in the $200-400 price tag for their OS software.
But users of Unix, Linux and BSD have enjoyed this privelege for years, and also gotten it for free. In fact in most instances the entire OS was free and also includes equivalent Office software, games, web-design software and most any kind of software you can think of.
All is not lost, as Linux in particular has developed over the last 2 to 2-1/2 years or so into a product that is just as good or better as MS Windows on the desktop and still remains superior in the server department. 71-73% of all websites are hosted on Linux-Apache servers.
The newest and most powerful firewall included or available on most ALL Linux Distros is called SeLinux, or Security-Enhanced Linux and was developed by the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. It's very customizable and can even place every APP and program in it's own isolated cell, securely hidden from hackers, yet fluently integrated with each other on the desktop.
In case you haven't guessed by now, I am an avid fan of Linux, either on the desktop OR in the Server room. You can download Linux "free", burn it to a blank CD-Rom or DVD, then install it on your PC as a stand-alone OS or a Dual-Boot system side-by-side with MS Windows. At boot-time, you just click on the OS you want to load, Linux or Windows.
If you've never seen or heard of Linux, you're a Linux-Newbie. It's recommended to start with a user-friendly distro like Ubuntu or OpenSuse. You can find all the info on and download these and many other Linux OS's at http://distrowatch.com . Happy Computing.
Your Friend,
The Benster!
