Death Toll From Greek Fires Reaches 46

ZAHARO, Greece (AP) - Forest fires sweeping uncontrolled across southern Greece have killed 46 people, some found Saturday in the charred homes of mountain villages reached too late by rescuers hampered by wind-driven flames. New blazes erupted across the country, including a fire on the fringes of Athens.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said arson was suspected in some of the 170 fires that have broken out since Friday morning. He declared a nationwide state of emergency and vowed to pursue the perpetrators.

A 65-year-old man was arrested and charged with arson and multiple counts of homicide in a fire that killed six people in Areopolis, a town in the southern Peloponnese, said fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis.

``So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts of the country cannot be a coincidence,'' Karamanlis said a nationally televised address. ``The state will do everything it can to find those responsible and punish them.''

The deadliest fire was in the western Peloponnese region of southern Greece, where at least 38 people were killed in mountain villages near the town Zaharo, the fire department said. A massive fire whipped by strong winds continued to burn out of control.

Firefighters searching through charred houses after daybreak found 10 bodies in the village of Makistos, the department said. They were believed to include a mother and her four children reported missing during the night.

``I feel deep grief for our dead,'' Karamanlis said. ``I feel deep pain for the mother who perished in the flames with her arms round her children. I feel anger - the same that you feel.''

Diamandis said there were at least 70 new fires Saturday, and the death toll had risen to 46.

Nine people - including three firefighters - died near Zaharo after a car crashed into a fire truck and led to a pile up as people tried to flee the area, the fire department said.

Hot, dry winds gusting to gale force were expected to continue Saturday before abating in the evening. The winds frequently prevented firefighting planes from taking off, leaving mainly ground forces to fight the flames in the southern Peloponnese, occasionally helped by helicopters.

Desperate villagers and local mayors called television and radio stations to plead for help. The military was sending 500 soldiers and several helicopters to join the firefighting.

A three-day heat wave, in which temperatures have touched 104 Fahrenheit, has left forests and shrubland parched. Fires have raged from the western Ionian islands to Ioannina in northwest Greece, and down to the south.

The skies above Athens turned red with smoke for hours, and ashes fell in the center of the capital as wind drove the flames across the dry landscape.

Authorities evacuated nuns from a convent and closed off a major highway on Mount Ymittos near Athens as flames approached the capital's eastern outskirts, damaging buildings in the Papagou suburb, the fire department said. Firemen assisted by water-dropping aircraft and hundreds of volunteers brought the blaze under partial control. No injuries were reported.

A fire on the island of Evia north of the capital grew through the night, and the authorities declared a state of emergency in the area, said Sofia Moutsou, the mayor of the town of Styra. At least three villages were evacuated, the fire department's Diamandis said.

Greece appealed for help from European Union countries. France, Germany, Spain and non EU-member Norway were sending firefighting aircraft, and Cyprus offered firefighters and trucks.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he was ``saddened by the tragic loss of human lives'' and voiced hope that member states would send assistance.

Greece has suffered its worst summer for forest fires this year, with hundreds of blazes burning thousands of hectares of forest and brushland.

With early elections just three weeks away, the devastating fires are certain to become a political issue. The government has come under criticism for its response to previous fires, which killed 10 people.

News about Georgios In Greece. he is now being affected by this horrible Tragedy. Please, Let us all Pray very hard. Prayer is Much needed. Last Greek news report has said death toll is over 100 now and there are still many villages to look through.

From Dr. Michael just minutes ago:

PHILOXENIA & UBIEE Friends/Teams,

I just got off the Phone with Georgios nearly 3.am his time, and before anything else, he wants you to know that he is fine and save.

He says: He feels like livening on an Island. Everywhere it is burning surrounding him and there is a 100 miles between him and them.

All I can say I am glad he is unharmed, I am not sure why and I am not sure how the fire happened so suddenly in 174 Locations, but I do know that our Prayers are making the difference.

The Difference in protecting our loved Georgios and his family from getting harmed by those catastrophic fires all over Greece. The latest count say 52 people have lost their live and authorities believe it could be even much higher. 60 villages have been burned down to the ashes and over 500.000 thousand people are evacuated.

The Internet is not working for him being close to the Bulgarian Boarder, and it could be a day or 2 for him to get back on line he says. He asked me to share this information with you, and he sends his love and friendship back to all of you that are his friends and who are not.

He welcomes the initiative for the UBIEEaidGREECE VORTEXES 740 & 741, since the Greek Economy will not be on his feet for at least 30 Years as he believes, to recover from what they are currently experiencing.

The whole crops are burned, soon many basic products that are needed will find a shortage. Price might even Skyrocket in some parts. So please do not stop in supporting a whole Nation battled by Fire as it has never before in it whole History.

Some already blame Turkey for it and many media are pointing into many directions. What you will see, that all political parties have joined forces and pulling at the moment on the same string of help the People In Need! Let do so to here in AdlandPRO.

Best regards to all of you, I look forward personally to hear from Georgios again.

May Peace prevail in all of us

With very best regards

Yours Sincerely

Dr.Michael U. Dolgoruky

For Georgios & all the Greek nation,

I'm so sorry.  We can't understand why such devastating things happen.

Somewhere there has to be a reason, even if we can't comprehend it.

If we all pray that God's angels go to the aid of the Greek people,

especially those who are suffering physically,

that they pour their light on the situation,

that they support, protect, comfort and physically help all those in need,

as well as those people who can bring some help to this suffering nation,

we can help.

I believe that if we all concentrate on this we can make a difference.

I ask everyone to join me in prayer and to join me in keeping the Greek people in our thoughts so that love and light can be poured on this devastated nation.

Even if we can not help physically, we can help in this way.

Amen

Greek Fires Race Toward Ancient Sites

AMALIADA, Greece (AP) - The fires consuming southern Greece raced toward Ancient Olympia and the nearby Temple of Apollo on Sunday, engulfing entire villages and the parched forests blocking their path toward some of the most revered sites of antiquity.

At least 51 people were confirmed dead, including a woman found with her arms around the bodies of her four children, and more were feared lost in the country's worst wildfires in decades.

Church bells rang out in the village of Kolyri, near Ancient Olympia, as residents gathered their belongings and fled through the night. Villagers returned to find at least seven gutted houses.

``It's hell everywhere,'' said Costas Ladas, who said the fire covered more than a mile in three minutes. ``I've never seen anything like it.''

Fotis Hadzopoulos, another resident, said the evacuation was chaotic. ``Children were crying, and their mothers were trying to comfort them, `` he said.

The worst fires - 42 major fronts - were concentrated in the mountains of the Peloponnese in southern Greece and on the island of Evia north of Athens. Arson has been blamed in several cases, and seven people have been detained.

The flames surrounded and isolated villages, prompting inhabitants to plead for help on television and radio as the fires neared towns near Ancient Olympia in the south.

``We're going to burn alive here,'' one woman told Greek television from the village of Lambeti. She said residents were using garden hoses in an attempt to save their homes.

Efforts to contain the inferno were initially helped by a drop in the gale-force winds that swept fires through thousands of acres of forest and scrub since Friday, the fire department said. But the winds revived early in the afternoon

``Fires are burning in more than half the country,'' department spokesman Nikos Diamandis said. ``This is definitely an unprecedented disaster for Greece.''

The government, which has come under harsh criticism for its response to the fires, on Sunday decided to give up to $13,000 in aid to people who lost relatives or property.

``All these areas have suffered an economic and social catastrophe,'' Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis said. ``We can all sense the grief and pain of afflicted people.''

Firefighters began to reach burned-out villages and there were fears the death toll would rise. Diamandis said it was impossible as yet to estimate how large an area had been burned and how many homes had been destroyed.

Winds abruptly intensified early Sunday afternoon, whipping flames in the direction of Ancient Olympia - where the Olympic Games were held in antiquity.

The fire blazed into the nearby village of Varvasaina, destroying several houses. As residents rushed to battle the flames, others, stunned, walked the streets holding their heads in their hands. One man dashed out of his house clutching a shotgun.

Dozens of charred bodies were found across fields, homes, along roads and in cars. The fire department confirmed 51 deaths, and there were fears the toll could increase as rescuers searched burned areas.

Flames were also approaching the ancient temple of Apollo Epikourios, near the picturesque town of Andritsaina in the southwestern Peloponnese.

Andritsaina Mayor Tryphon Athanassopoulos said the fire was less than two miles from the 2,500-year-old monument - and less than a mile from his town.

``We are trying to save the Temple of Apollo, as well as Andritsaina itself,'' he told state NET television.

Much of the Peloponnese was ablaze, and churches across the country were filled with people praying for the fires to relent.

Nearly 1,000 soldiers and military helicopters reinforced firefighters stretched to the limit by Greece's worst summer of wildfires. In the most ravaged area - a string of mountain villages in southern Greece - rescue crews picked through a grim aftermath that spoke of last-minute desperation as the fires closed in.

By sea and by land, authorities evacuated hundreds of people trapped by the flames.

At least 12 countries were sending reinforcements for Greece's overstretched firefighters, and six water-dropping planes from France and Italy were due to start operations later Sunday.

``So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts of the country cannot be a coincidence,'' Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said in a nationally televised address. ``The state will do everything it can to find those responsible and punish them.''
