WEB RADIO PROTESTS WITH A DAY OF SILENCE
6/25/2007 7:34:27 PM

             "DEAR FRIENDS OF RADIO"

NEW YORK - Web radio broadcasters across the United States were preparing for a 'Day of Silence' on June 26 to protest the U.S. government's plans to boost royalty payments to artists and record companies by more than 300 percent, when their music is played online.

"These proposals will bankrupt the industry," Jake Ward, a spokesman for the lobbying group SaveNetRadio Coalition, said on Monday.

"They're killing the Golden Goose."

The 'Day of Silence' is being organised by SaveNetRadio Coalition, whose 14,000 members include: Yahoo Inc., Viacom Inc, and RealNetworks Inc.

SaveNetRadio said the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board's March decision to boost royalty rates will kill the fledgling industry, if goes into effect on July 15.

It is hoping the 'Day of Silence' will help raise public awareness of the issue.

The organisation said the proposal also requires additional administrative fees which the organisation estimated could cost Webcasters around $1 billion ($NZ1.3 billion).

Hello everyone:

First, and as I have mentioned before, this will have no brearing on TGAMM FM or its on air operation. We made sure we were well protected on all levels when we began over a year ago.

However, as a broadcaster with 30 plus years in the business stand with my brother and sisters in the broadcasting Industry when I say that what the government is proposing is wrong on all counts.

Please, put the word out about this forum and let's all band together to use it as our very on online petition to let others know that we stand together to keep Internet Radio as it should be... FREE from Big Brothers greedy hands.

Thanks Marilyn,

I'm not a broadcaster, but what you have published is correct. If people don't stand up against the Government now, we may even start paying taxes for just reading our emails. The 'Day of Silence' is a good idea. I will pass this on.
