- On February 28, 2007, the Washington Post reported that twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver of Maryland had recently died of a toothache, although a standard $80 tooth extraction might have saved his life.

No family should have to go through this ordeal. But the sad truth is that millions of children do suffer needlessly – just like Deamonte – every day.

The All Healthy Children Act, based on the Children's Defense Fund Action Council’s All Healthy Children proposal, contains these four essential principles:

FIRST, it insures ALL children. In 2007, in the wealthiest nation in the world, we should not be debating how many or how few children should have health coverage.

SECOND, it addresses the inequities between the current Medicaid and SCHIP programs and ensures all medically necessary benefits for all children no matter where they live.

THIRD, it simplifies and automatically enrolls children, reducing bureaucracy and ensuring that fewer families have to suffer heart-wrenching ordeals like Deamonte’s family did. 

And FOURTH, it guarantees prenatal health care for every pregnant woman at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty level.
