Hi John and Luella

Maya is truly an inspiration and definitely deserves this honour.  Great choice.  God bless.

Thank you Carla for reminding me.
I have had a flat out crush on Dr Angelou for as long as I can remember!

Once I was the graveyard shift operator at a five star hotel where Dr Angelou and other notables stopped over in Los Angeles, most had typical "personality" types manners in dealing with people.

When Dr Angelou answered her phone, my spine would automatically get straight, my words automatically came out of my mouth gramatically correct and in good tones and inflections and probably a number of other little "corrections" that happend when conversing with this woman. She teaches, just by you being aware of her.

My favorite phrase of hers is "If you had known better, you would have done better."
My favorite poesm is "Phenomenal Woman".

Thank you for sharing her in this forum.

Rina, my little Princess- this is for you:
.........(Congrats Terry!)

PHENOMENAL WOMAN
by Dr Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Hello Luella,

This has been one of the best Women of Courage threads.  I very much enjoyed reading more about
Maya as she is still alive and is still inpiring people
all around her.

Who said, you need a degree to accomplish anything?!

Thank you Pauline and Joyce for sharing these two
wonderful poems Maya wrote.  Pauline, I had read
the poem you shared before - yet it has been signed
as Unkown Authour, so this was great that I finally
know who wrote it.

Kind regards
Amanda
