Can I pipe in again for a sec?
When you feature women from my culture, I get excited because growing up people who looked like me were not featured any where in any media other than Jet magazine and Ebony magazine.
As a result, as they gradually became known more widely-it seemed more like family members hitting the big time. Any time a Black person came on television-every Black person found a television to watch cause it was a rare thing.
Since people here seem genuinely interested in these women's accomplishments-I would suggest that you look more closely at the times they are a part of.
The life surrounding Sophia for instance in The Color Purple, Dr Angelou's times (she and my mom were born in the same year), Oprah-these were not abberations-these conditions were more the norm here in the Untied States. They still exist in the latin communities, I know and probably the other "under classes" as well. They are just out of sight.
The problems we are dealing with in New Orleans are a direct result of people who have been trapped in these destructive mindsets while the rest of the world had matured a bit.
There are Maya Angelou's and Oprahs' who can't get out, thrive and become magnificent-she shows us that it is possible.
