From the May 2007 issue of Men's Health Magazine

8 simple ways to save the environment

1. An hour of lawn mowing creates the pollution equivalent of driving a car 100 miles. Overseed your lawn with a slow-growing grass--fescue in northern climates, cetipede in the Southeast, and so on--and you'll cut your mowing frequency in half. (tip: do more landscape gardening as well, to create a smaller lawn area--SB)

2. Incandescent lightbulbs exhaust 90% of their energy as heat. If every U.S. household switched to compact fluorescent bulbs, it'd be like taking 2 million cars off the road. (Canada has passed a plan to eliminate incandescent bulbs from store shelves by 2012--SB)

3. The average mature tree sucks up 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and releases enough oxygen to sustain two people. Plus, if you plant them strategically--to cast shade on your house--you'll reduce your annual energy costs by 10 to 35%. The National Arbor Day Foundation will send you 10 young trees with planting instructions for $10 (www.arborday.org)

4. The average piece of produce is trucked 1,500 miles to your local supermarket. Find nearby sources at www.farmersmarketusa.org.

5. Trade your desktop computer for a laptop, which will use 50 to 75% less energy.

6. Forty percent of all electricity used to power TVs, DVD players, and other home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off but not unplugged. Plug everything into a power strip, and switch it off at night. (Phantom power drain is a huge problem...even the clock on your computer drains power after shutdown. Do you really need your TV set to the correct time?--SB)

7. Don't use screen savers--those moving images consume $50 in electricity a year.

8. Keeping your tires properly inflated (check them monthly) and your air filter clean (change it at least every 12,000 miles) improves your vehicle's fuel economy by 13 percent. (I also suggest getting regular engine and fuel-line cleanings, every 2 years is good. Plus, if you're handy and can open the air filter unit, you can extend the life of your air filter by using a shop-vac to blow out some of the dust. I do this at the end of summer, which is our dusty season; to get ready for the fall ane winter--SB)

Hi Kathy
that is definitely food for thought - I particularly liked the idea of mowing the lawn less and I am just off to buy a power strip to plug all my stuff into, not to mention some energy saving light bulbs - genius but common sense!  Thanks for the tips

Read in this morning's paper that Canadian legislators will have the ban on inefficient light bulbs in the bag by the end of the year - meaning that by the end of 2012, you won't see the common bulb.

#8 got my attention because of the suggestion to maintain the air filter. This is not a good idea if the filter is not designed to do that. The Ea air filter comes to mind because it will stay in place for a year and only needs to be vacuumed or shop blown when serviced. It's efficiency is superior to others.

Another part of car maintenance is synthetic engine and drive train lubricants. Here again, the product that comes to mind will reduce fuel consumption, maintenance and operation expenses along with reducing emissions.

Ethylene glycol should also be banned. It's lethal and toxic.  How often do you see antifreeze spills on mall and driveway parking spots? When this gets into the drains and eventually the near by tributary where fish thrive,  it will kill them. Your pet will be attracted to its sweet flavor and will experience a horrendously painful and irreversible death. What's the solution? Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is not toxic and not lethal to the living things that may ingest it - accidentally or intentionally.

Take note, this is not an ad, just additional facts that make a difference to the environment.

The trees I can dig because I raise them for a money crop.

The new light bulbs are more expensive but they last longer in most cases.

The laptops last around four years and are far less capable for most users. Desktops last for twenty years and are very upgradeable for the future.

And they are more energy efficient now more than ever before.

The power strips are a must for all your products.

And it is true if you don't turn them off at night or while your gone the power is still in your power supply and could get knocked out by a storm or cause a fire while you are asleep or gone.

Tires inflated correctly give you better gas mileage and better performance and handling. Making you safer on the roads too.Could very easily prevent you from having a wreck.

Mowing I do in the evening while it is cooler. I have considered getting a goat or two, but my wife ends the discussion before I get to far.

My neighbor does have a back yard full of chickens that brings a smell and plenty of flies. But they eat alot of bugs.

And we have an early alarm clock with the rooster crowing ever morning .

Don't do screen savers I am always on the computer or I have it turned off.

Sincerely,

Jessie Goss

Great topic Kathy H I just changed my light bulbs a little over a week ago. it will be very interesting to see the difference in the light bill when it comes..
Always on top of the car filter as it also saves on Gas milage as well. Change those spark plugs often as well. New fuel injuction filters also increase the gas savings..
Have a great day!
