Hi Thomas.
Not all traffic exchanges are paid-to-surf. This one is odd, because on the home page it says "Industry High Commissions," but I can't find anywhere where it mentions commissions, even in the TOS. Often traffic exchanges will offer a paid upgrade where you can get 1:1 traffic ratios or purchase additional hits, and that's where the commissions probably come in.
Since this one doesn't appear to be paid-to-surf, there's no specific need to put any money in. That means no risk (no earnings either), and if it's working for you, great! I've done quite a few free traffic exchanges as well as the paid surf sites, and the quality doesn't seem to vary much. What does make a difference is how easy it is to sell what you have.
If you're using traffic exchanges for promotions, these are my best tips:
- Don't use an MLM or other business splash page. Use your own.
- Make your page simple, clear and to the point. Maybe a link on it (make sure the link opens in another window (target="_blank")). Don't have a page so long that the important information requires the viewer to scroll. NOBODY WILL LOOK AT IT.
- Don't use a popup script. These will interupt surfing and get you banned.
- Make sure your page doesn't break the frame. This will shut down the surf bar and get you banned.
- If possible, save your sales message for a newsletter. Include a simple signup box. I did this with an autoresponder, and over 200 people that otherwise would have ignored my lengthy sales pitch hung around for a 6-part mailing sequence. The 20 seconds my page was on their screen didn't get the sale, but a week of emails did the trick.
If anyone wants help setting up their own landing pages for use in either paid surf sites or traffic exchanges (the same principles of design apply to both), let me know. I'll gladly review a page that you have for free and give you some pointers. If you want help designing a more compact sales message, I can do these pretty cheap. They're optimized for traffic exchange, so there isn't a lot of SEO that goes into them. Just let me know :)
