Around this time year across many countries, the matter of tax returns become the subject of frequent conversations. Some will pay their taxes, while others will just refuse to do so.
Personal ethics in paying money to the Government is really personal. But justice applied incorrectly in this issue can be risky.
This point has to do with the fact that some may assess their situation
and decide that they will not pay any money to their “enemy,” the
Government. This decision can be detrimental to the person who
decides to withhold what some call “fair due.” But that is up to each
individual to decide.
When an individual or company looks at their accounting records for the
year or period, they will have to look at what money is due to the
country’s political powers. This is basic business ethics, financial
responsibility, and discipline. Personal Justice comes into the picture
when, for example, the individual or business decides that they did
not make any or sufficient money to pay taxes and so they, at least for
this time period, should not be accountable for that.
The Tax Authorities may disagree or agree with that basic example and others of personal justice, but that’s another matter.
In life, paying taxes and applying personal ethics and/or justice are real, but so are the consequences of unethical business operation and accountability. We can do our best to keep our personal business personal, but we must equally do our best to keep our business in business. Let each person ethics and justice decide.
