Building winning relationships

Being a successful leader in business and in one's personal life is a real challenge. Being a successful leader in the public's eye is an even greater challenge.

As public officials, representatives of the people, you must learn to make choices and decisions that are right for your constituents. It is also essential that you learn to work with your constituents in the manner that they find most effective. Each official has his/her own natural style of leading and each constituent likes to be led in a different manner. This is because all people are unique. It is important to understand these differences and sometimes make necessary adjustments.

Individuals have four different behavioral styles: Dominance, Influencing, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

Dominant individuals are most interested in results. They are fast paced people who are direct and bottom line oriented. Constituents who are Dominant want to have their concerns dealt with promptly, efficiently, and directly!

The Influencing style individual is also fast paced, but they are more interested in maintaining a fun, upbeat environment. Constituents who are Influencing want their public officials to be friendly, inspiring, and positive!

The Steadiness style individual is a slower paced, sincere person whose main concern is being a team player. For this constituent it is important for the leaders to show that they are sincere, caring and concerned about the entire community.

The Conscientious person is also slower paced, yet his/her main concern is getting things done precisely and correctly. It may take longer to get things done, but for them it is all about getting things done thoroughly and perfectly. It is about things being right from the get go.

Why are people are so different? People have different goals, different motivations and different perceptions of things. Because all people are different they need to be treated differently. Public officials do not have to change who they are, but they need to know how to adapt their style to meet the needs of their constituents.

As a local elected official, you need to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your own behavioral style as well as those you work with and serve on a daily basis. If you gain a better working knowledge of the behavioral needs of yourself, your staff and your constituents you will be a more effective leader.
