What famous people have said about medicine and healing
2/21/2007 10:22:27 PM
Often, when I post or write an article promoting nutrition, natural diets and natural remedies and oppose the side-effect laden FDA approved medications created by man in laboratories, I am labeled as some kind of kook whose thinking is outside mainstream and accepted thought.

Perhaps it might be instructive to take a look at what famous figures from the past have had to say on the subject. Here is a sampling:

"Nature is the physician of man.”
Author:Hippocrates, “the father of medicine”

"Medicine, the only profession that labors incessantly to destroy the reason for its existence."

"Better to hunt in fields for health unbought, Than fee the doctor for a nauseous draught. The wise for cure on exercise depend; God never made his work for man to mend."

- Thomas Edison

"Having good health is very different than only being not sick."
Seneca the Younger, 50AD

"In health there is freedom. Health is the first of all liberties."
Henri-Frederic Amiel 1828-1881

"Most diseases are the result of medication that has been applied to relieve and take away a beneficient and warning symptom on the part of Nature."
Elbert Hubbard

"Leave your drugs in the chemist's pots if you can cure your patient with food."
Hippocrates, 420BC

"One of the first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicine."

"A merry heart does good like medicine."
- Proverbs 17:22

"Medicine makes people ill, mathematics makes them sad, theology makes them sinful."
- Martin Luther (1483-1546)

"I have endeavored to show that there is no real service of humanity in the profession [of medicine] and that it is injurious to mankind."
- Mahatma Gandhi

"The miserable have no other medicine but only hope."
- William Shakespeare Measure for Measure

"Doctors are men who prescribe medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing."
- Voltaire [Francois-Marie Arouet]

"Formerly, when religion was strong and Science weak, men mistook magic for medicine; now, when science is strong and religion weak, men mistake medicine for magic."
- Thomas Szasz, M.D.

- Voltaire (1694 - 1778)
