I wanted to add to Manuel's post...procrastination and change. This is most likely why America hasn't learned the metric system, even though there was a big thing about learning it back in the mid-1970's. Things won't go forward if we even have a small excuse, but having a very big excuse like 100,000,000's of people not making an effort...but the metric system isn't my main focus either, of course not! It's just an example of a large group refusing to change and saying "He didn't, she didn't, they didn't, so why should I?"
USA and Brunei are are the only 2 countries in the world who don't use metric as their main form of measurement. And when we DO refer to metric here in USA, we're not precise, the media has made it okay to say "a meter is a LITTLE MORE than a yard"..."a liter is a LITTLE MORE than a quart"...we're a LITTLE MORE than stubborn!
