Prevent Prostate Cancer
2/7/2007 1:19:49 AM
Let's face it guy's prostate cancer for us is almost a given. Especially if it runs in the family. My father had it, my grandfather and my great grandfather. Need I say more. However there is one very natural way to reduce your risk for prostate cancer. SIMPLY TAKE IN GOOD PROPORTIONS OF TOMATOES. Any form whether it be the tomatoe or tomatoe sauce or spaghetti sauce. HEADS UP!!!! If you are an African American man your chances increase substantially. You especially need to keep a very close eye on this.

Hello Jeffrey,

You are so right ON. We really need to get the word out.

Do read on because I just got this document about Tomatoes and broccoli that when you eat them together are more effective in cancer prevention.

The Natural Cancer-Fighting Power of Tomatoes and Broccoli

 http://www.mercola.com/2007/feb/3/the-natural-cancer-fighting-power-of-tomatoes-and-broccoli.htm

Broccoli and tomatoes, both of which have been previously found to help fight cancer, have been found to be even more effective against prostate cancer when eaten together as part of a daily diet.

Researchers fed rats who had been implanted with prostate cancer cells a diet containing 10 percent broccoli powder and 10 percent tomato powder for a period of 22 weeks.

Other rats received either one or the other but not both, a dose of lycopene (the substance in tomatoes believed fight cancer), or the drug finasteride. Another set of rats was castrated.

At the end of the study, the tomato and broccoli combination diet was the most effective treatment; only castration even came close in terms of effectiveness.

The combination of vegetables may be more effective than either one alone because different compounds in each food work on different anti-cancer pathways.

One of the best sources for Tomatoes and Broccoli are the ones that have been ripening on the  Vines. The reason is because vines ripen vegetables have the highest Phytonutrients content simply because these vegetables were allowed to grow and mature on the vine.

Combinations of Tomato and Broccoli Enhance Antitumor Activity in Dunning R3327-H Prostate Adenocarcinomas

The consumption of diets containing 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily is the foundation of public health recommendations for cancer prevention, yet this concept has not been tested in experimental models of prostate cancer. We evaluated combinations of tomato and broccoli in the Dunning R3327-H prostate adenocarcinoma model. Male Copenhagen rats (n = 206) were fed diets containing 10% tomato, 10% broccoli, 5% tomato plus 5% broccoli (5:5 combination), 10% tomato plus 10% broccoli (10:10 combination) powders, or lycopene (23 or 224 nmol/g diet) for 22 weeks starting 1 month prior to receiving s.c. tumor implants. We compared the effects of diet to surgical castration (2 weeks before termination) or finasteride (5 mg/kg body weight orally, 6 d/wk). Castration reduced prostate weights, tumor areas, and tumor weight (62%, P < 0.001), whereas finasteride reduced prostate weights (P < 0.0001), but had no effect on tumor area or weight. Lycopene at 23 or 224 nmol/g of the diet insignificantly reduced tumor weights by 7% or 18%, respectively, whereas tomato reduced tumor weight by 34% (P < 0.05). Broccoli decreased tumor weights by 42% (P < 0.01) whereas the 10:10 combination caused a 52% decrease (P < 0.001).

Tumor growth reductions were associated with reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis, as quantified by proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and the ApopTag assay. The combination of tomato and broccoli was more effective at slowing tumor growth than either tomato or broccoli alone and supports the public health recommendations to increase the intake of a variety of plant components. Hello,

My dad died of Prostate Cancer, it then went to Bone Cancer, and then Lymph Cancer. That was 20 years ago & there is much more know about how to treat & prevent it now.  At that time he traveled from Illinois down to Texas for experimental meds & therapy but they had given him 6 months to live & he pulled 5 years out of it!!

Have a wonderful day,

Sheryl

Here is a little more information on eating tomato's.

Scientists are suggesting that tomato lovers may be more likely to reduce the risk of serious disease. Lycopene, an anti oxidant which gives tomatoes their lovely rich red color, helps remove free radicals from the body. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules and have been implicated in cancer and other serious diseases.

Professor Michael Avirim of the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel who is testing lycopene in clinical trials says, ' In its natural form, lycopene is an excellent anti oxidant that helps to prevent formation of oxidized LDL, the 'bad' cholesterol in blood, which contributes to the build up of plaque that narrows, stiffens and constricts arteries and can lead to heart attacks. When this natural extract was added to cancer cell cultures, the lycopene inhibited their growth. Lycopene is the most potent nutritional antioxidant found to date.

Another study compared men who had had a heart attack with the same number of healthy men and found that those with high levels of lycopene appeared to reduce their risk of heart diseases by 50%. The study’s coordinator, Lenore Kohlmeier, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the university of North Carolina, said, 'Based on our findings, and other research, lycopene can be an excellent antioxidant, we recommend that people eat tomato based cooked foods.'

Several recent studies have shown that a diet rich in tomatoes and tomato products is strongly linked to a reduced risk of certain cancers. In a six year study of 48,000 male professionals, Dr Edward Giovannucci and colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that consuming tomatoes and tomato based products between five to seven serving a week was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer of 21% to 34%.

Another study published in the International Journal of Cancer said that lycopene appears to protect against cancer of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum. Researchers at the University of Illinois report that women with the highest lycopene levels had a five fold lower risk of developing precancerous signs of cervical cancer than women with lowest lycopene levels.

The human body does not produce lycopene alone and therefore relies on a consumption of tomatoes and tomato based products for this anti oxidant. Nutritionists and other health professionals have long advocated the cancer preventative benefits of a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

.

Lycopene: Just The Facts

Research by Dr. Joseph Levy and colleagues from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, may have identified the unique mechanism through which lycopene protects against cancer which is by activating cancer-preventive phase II enzymes.

Lycopene is an open-chain unsaturated carotenoid that imparts red color to tomatoes.

Lycopene is a proven anti-oxidant that may lower the risk of certain diseases including cancer and heart disease.

In the body, lycopene is deposited in the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. Its concentration in body tissues tends to be higher than all other carotenoids.

Epidemiological studies have shown that high intake of lycopene-containing vegetables is inversely associated with the incidence of certain types of cancer. For example, habitual intake of tomato products has been found to decrease the risk of cancer of the digestive tract among Italians.

In one six-year study by Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, the diets of more than 47,000 men were studied. Of 46 fruits and vegetables evaluated, only the tomato products (which contain large quantities of lycopene) showed a measurable relationship to reduce prostate cancer risk. As consumption of tomato products increased, levels of lycopene in the blood increased, and the risk for prostate cancer decreased. The study also showed that the heat processing of tomatoes and tomato products increases Lycopene bioavailability.

Ongoing research suggests that lycopene can reduce the risk of macular degenerative disease, serum lipid oxidation and cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin.

Hello Jeffrey

Thanks again for your support.

You are so right about the information here in this forum.

This one thread is so important because many parents are setting their children up for Cancer with out knowing it.

The TOXIC chemical DEA in shampoos is so TOXIC that they band it

in the UK in 1976 and it is still being used here in the US.

Stop using main stream shampoo immediately!

Nitrosamine: According to Dr. Epstein, "We've known since 1976 that DEA will react with nitrites which are present, as preservatives or contaminants, in personal care products, to produce a carcinogen known as nitrosodiethanolamine. This is found in virtually any cosmetic that contains DEA. Consumers have been exposed without any information and without any guidance whatsoever

In 1979 the FDA warned the cosmetic industry that DEA was dangerous because of this. The cosmetic industry ignored the warning! While over in Europe, strong action was taken to phase out the use of DEA." Padimate-O (also known as octyl dimethyl PABA): Act by releasing nitrites which combine with DEA to form *nitrosamines. Found in cosmetics, especially sunscreens. "The most prudent consumers will prefer sunscreens without padimate-O," states Dr. Epstein.
