This is the bottom line here, gaining the respect from others, well Kirk this is how it is,
If you want respect you must first give respect.
You want to keep respect you must maintain respect.

You ever hear the cliche one bad apple???
well that one bad apple if your around it guess what??It is called guilt by association, not to mention if everyone knows you were once associated with a bad person or bad business now your name and character are tarnished,
