Hello Sarah,

I can emphasize with you not finding malt vinegar -
It too me a long time before I could find some when I moved to the States.  When I did find a supply from a
grocery shop that specialised in many products that
I could not find from usual grocery shops I bought
a 5 gallon bottle which I am still using. I also bought
marmite and vegemite from this same shop - can't
think of its name - something like World Market..!

Malt vinegar has held a big part in our home back in New Zealand because my mother would make a lot of pickles, chutney and relishes and many other foods
which all had vinegar in the receipes.

I used vinegar when I cooked corned beef by pouring about a couple of tablespoons in the cooking water which would neutralize the brine flavour.

I always made my own salad dressing so vinegar was
in the receipe, Sweet and sour pork etc and New Zealand world famour Pavlova recipe which many Kiwi's bake has a teaspoon or two of malt vinegar.

There was lots of different receipes that I do not make here for one reason or another.

However with this list it will remind me of all the uses that vinegar is very useful for and much healthier to
use and the invironment.

Happy New Year
Amanda

I used 1/2 c vinegar in the fabric softener holder of my washing machine when I washed my kids cloth diapers when they were infants.  It helped to neutralize the urine smell.  Thank goodness I'm out of that stage!  :)

Hello Cary,

Thank you for posting.

I am surprised but delighted that you use to use cloth diapers (nappies as they
are called in New Zealand) I was beginning to think they were a 'thing of the
past'!  I used cloth for both of my children when they were babies. Those days
were a long time ago too! My daughter turned 25 and my son will be 23 in a
couple of days.

I use to buy a product called Nappy Rinse to keep them whitened and
brightened and take out the smell also I hung the laundry outside on the line.
I miss outside drying since moving to the States, nobody has outside lines
anymore.

I used Nappy Rinse for soaking of ordinary clothing rather than bleaches, so
much gentler on the fabric.

But, getting back to the uses of vinegar, thank you for sharing this tip.  There
are many uses for this inexpensive kitchen essential.

Kind regards
