Salute to the Great State of Michigan

SALUTE TO THE GREAT STATE OF MICHIGAN

Michigan, The water wonderland of the great lakes, touching 4 of the 5 great lakes. It is filled with rivers and lakes with half of the state being forest land for good hunting and fishing. Nine million people a year think of it as a play ground vacation spot.

The state consists of two peninsulas, the upper and lower. When one is in the Upper people talk about going "down below" meaning they are going to the lower peninsula. The upper peninsula is referred to as "the U.P." The lower peninsula, being shaped as a closed hand means you can never get lost. The map is at the end of your arm.

Brook Trout is the state fish but Coho Salmon is popular even being caught in the lakes since being introduced to the state. Michigan is the Automobile Capital of the World, as Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, and Lansing produce more cars and trucks than any other cities.

You can travel from Paradise to Hell in one day. (Paradise in the UP and Hell, near Ann Arbor are unincorported towns)

You can visit a little bit of Germany when you visit Frankenmuth or learn about the Netherlands when you visit Holland, Mich. Both places have festivals which attract many visitors.

A tad of history: Michigan was named for the lake. The Chippewa Indians called the lake" Michigama", which means great or large lake. Michigan is nicknamed the wolverine state because early fur traders brought valuable wolverine peilts to trading posts in the region.

French explorers were the first white man in the 1600's to visit the area. France controlled the area for nearly 150 years, but did little to develop it. The British gained control after defeating France in the French and Indian Wars (1689-1763).

SALUTE: Kathy Cuenca of Grand Haven, Mich.

Now let's try out the map skills. On your left hand, Trace the left edge to the base of your little finger. There you are, that's Grand Haven.

Visit our friend Herb Gruenewald of Burton Mich.

It's a suburb of Flint, Genesee County.  Looking at your hand it would be about 3/4 of an inch west from the base of your thumb, according to Herb.

Go meet Tom Sparrow (now that is what a Michigander looks like)

You will find his hometown 1" up from your wrist and 1 1/4" in from the right side of your hand. oopps move over one more hair...you you got it.

There are 108 Adlanders from the great state of Michigan. Go invite them all to be on your friends list.

There, now that's more than you knew before and probably want to know.

Deborah, Can you show me on your left hand where your relatives live? That might be a good stopping place for any of us when we go visit.
