How to Avoid an Unhappy Marriage: Practical Advice for Married Couples
11/8/2006 11:49:21 AM
Hello my friends, As you can see I am going to begin being a marriage therepist.I will be now registered soon as a Registered Counselor in the State of Washington. How to Avoid an Unhappy Marriage: Practical Advice for Married Couples A marriage is a union between two people and has many very different components to it. Married couples create a home together in order to share their lives, finances, interests, family, leisure time and sometimes work too. While married couples don’t need to agree on everything, they do need to work out what they can personally tolerate from each other. And that changes over time because a marriage is made up of two people whose needs and desires change over time. What was acceptable in the first year of marriage maybe completely unacceptable five years down the line. A marriage relationship is like any other partnership, it is dynamic and needs constant upkeep to maintain. When you consider how multi-faceted two people can be and how much synergy is needed for them to live together for decades, is it any surprise that so many unions fall apart? But you need to know that a happy marriage is possible. However, as you probably already know, it doesn’t just happen all by itself. A couple has to work at a marriage for it to have any chance of succeeding. Sometimes that means trying new things. Sometimes that means compromising. Other times it is about being selfish about what you need. The secret of course is working out what to do when and often that only comes through experience and making lots of mistakes! Sex is an important part of any loving relationship. It isn’t always as important once a relationship is established as it is in love’s first flush but it can’t be ignored either. Why is sex so important? Because it creates intimacy and intimacy is the foundation of any loving relationship. And what about love and being romantic? Are they only for new lovers? Absolutely not. They are two more very important elements in a sustainable marriage. How often do you hear complaints about a husband or wife becoming disillusioned with their relationship because they feel like their partner takes them for granted. If you invest time and effort in keeping the love alive through romantic gestures then you won’t become complacent and your partner will be in no doubt about your feelings for them. How does family fit into a marriage? Sometimes well, other times it is the powder keg that ultimately blows the relationship apart. Parenting can take a heavy toll on a couple if they don’t continue to nurture their own bond along the way. Parents that investing all their energy in their children while ignoring their own needs and that of their marriage mean that sooner or later they will realise that there is little left to sustain their primary relationship.

Thank you Kathy. It does indeed take two to make it work or it can take one to destroy a marriage.
God Bless You
Good Luck with being a counselor.
