He was 76 years old.
Mr. Coffin retired from The Associated Press in 1975 after writing "Coffin's Needle" for 13 years.
He was born in Reno, Nev., graduated from the University of Nevada and married Jane O'Sullivan, a college classmate. Survivors include his son, Larry Coffin of New Jersey, and two grandchildren.
