Helen Keller touching the branch of a tree

Helen Keller

On June 27 the world will celebrate the 126th anniversary of Helen Keller's birth. Deaf and blind from infancy, Helen Keller played a leading role in most of the significant political, social, and cultural movements of the 20th century. Throughout her lifetime (1880-1968) she worked unceasingly to improve the lives of people who were blind and deaf. Helen's own approach to life can be summed up by her advice to a five-year-old blind child in 1932:

"Never bend your head. Always hold it high.

Hi Bogdan, Thanks for the great quote from a great lady. Helen Keller is certainly one who should be honored and respected for her amazing accomplishment. Only I have a problem with the word "but" as it negates that which preceeds it. I submit it is a word most people use incorrectly. Anywho, methinks what she said would be better were it the following. "While I am only one, I am still one. And while I cannot do everything, I can still do something. Thus, I will not refuse to do the something I can do." ------------- Neil

If you are not doing something, you will not be criticized, so as long as you are you know that you are actually doing something.

Helen Keller, heroine of Alabama, on the State Quarter, from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  Great lady.

Thank you for reminding us.
