Kathy, for lots of people, their many "friends" are really only acquaintances.  You have pointed out how friends can be separated from acquaintances.

It is very easy to be your friend in good times and bad. You are a loving and caring person. Someone who is there only in good times deserves the tag as a fair weather friend. Someone who is there through good and bad is like you, very special.
