In the town of Taihape I grew up in back in New Zealand we had the manual telephone right up until 1986, when we changed over to the latest start of the art digital phone system. I was employed by the Post Office which also ran this telephone exchange for 2 years in readiness for the change over.
I can relate to the customers using the telephone to call the operator to be connected. As one of many operators we had to ask "Number Please?" once the number was given say "through" or "sorry the number is engaged"
This story brought back memories of a time past that I actually was involved in.
