Sunscreen warning has it all wrong: people need more sunlight on their skin, not less
By Mike Adams

Canadians are being warned over the labeling used on sunscreen products, but these warnings have it all wrong. The warning that should be printed on sunscreen products is, "Warning -- you're not getting enough sun." The fact is, most people living in Canada, the UK, and even the United States suffer from a chronic deficiency in natural sunlight, and this lack of sunlight on their skin causes a great number of serious diseases, including depression, osteoporosis, schizophrenia, prostate cancer and even obesity. This is coming out now in new research published in the UK, and decades of misinformation about exposure to sunlight is finally being overturned in the medical industry. So, while health experts in Canada are complaining that sunscreens don't clearly explain the degree of protection they offer to users, the real issue here is that people need to be using a lot less sunscreen, and getting far more sunlight on their skin in the first place.

A good way to think about this is to think of the sun as providing something I call "vibrational nutrition." Sunlight is just like a nutrient that your body needs in order to function in a healthful way. It's not hard to understand why: the human species evolved in a natural environment where sunlight was readily available. Humans did not evolve under fluorescent lighting, nor in offices or industrial buildings. They evolved outside, under the sun, where they had frequent exposure to the healing rays of the sun. As a result, our bodies evolved ways to use that sunlight to support our health.

Exposure to sunlight, for example, creates Vitamin D in your body, and it is the deficiency of Vitamin D that is thought to be the primary cause of the chronic diseases I mentioned earlier. In other words, if you don't get enough sunlight on your skin on a regular basis, you are extremely likely to suffer from Vitamin D deficiencies that will inevitably result in chronic disease such as prostate cancer, depression, osteoporosis or obesity.

I find it somewhat amusing that our modern culture has become convinced that the sun is somehow evil. We flee from the sun and try to protect ourselves from its healing light by slathering on sunscreen and covering every inch of our bodies with thick clothing or hats. This is a completely irrational fear based on nothing but medical quackery and a desire to sell sunscreen. The sun is not only absolutely essential for human health, it is in fact the single provider of all life on planet earth. Without the sun, there would be no life -- no plants, no animals, no humans. So to consider the sun -- the source of all life -- to be something that's extremely dangerous to human health is utterly irrational.

This is not to say that you can't get sunburned if you aren't used to being under the sun, or if you follow the standard American diet that consists of processed foods, chemical additives, refined carbohydrates, soft drinks, and junk foods. Eating these foods alters your body chemistry, and makes you highly susceptible to sunburns. But by changing your diet -- removing processed foods, and adding
superfoods and nutritional supplements into your diet -- you can become nearly immune to sunburns, and you will find that even if you had extremely pale skin before, you can now enjoy natural sunlight on your skin without getting burned, and without experiencing any increased risk of skin cancer.

None of this, by the way, would be supported by the makers of sunscreen, who, of course, want to propagate the myth that the sun is extremely dangerous simply because the more the general public believes that myth, the more sunscreen they will purchase. However, many sunscreens are themselves dangerous products, containing highly toxic ingredients. Many sunscreens contain artificial fragrance, and this fragrance has been shown to contain a variety of carcinogenic chemicals that are absorbed through the skin, enter the bloodstream, and then attack the function of the liver and other organs. Sunscreens are also made with petroleum products and preservatives that are simply not safe for use on human skin. That's because the skin absorbs these chemicals, and as a result, many chemicals you put on your skin end up in your bloodstream.

The bottom line is that it is the sunscreen products themselves that cause cancer, and it is natural sunlight that actually prevents cancer. Note that this is a complete opposite of the myths propagated by the sunscreen manufacturers, the medical industry, and the popular press.

Thank you for this very informative article.

My knowledge on this subject is pretty basic, as I grew up and still reside in California where the sun is our friend (so to speak).  I have had my tanning days without sunscreen this is true, but I must say that it makes a whole lot of sense to protect ourselves from what has been "suggested" for a long time to cause skin cancer.  We do not that the lack of sunscreen (good ones) may cause sunburn and promote premature skin aging.  I say "suggested" as I am not medically education to know what is factual  Over the last few years it has been found that not only UV-B rays be targeted, but also UV-A rays which have been said to be even MORE damaging to the skin.

Something else I remember hearing is that our full daily dose of Vitamin D can be supplied to us by being in the sun for 15 minutes.  A good balance of anything is important, as we all know.  This includes outside activities.  If there is a possibiity that damage will be done without sunscreen protection on our skin I am definitely for it.  But, you are so right in saying that sunscreens may be worse than the sun.  A naturally based product with the proper protection against UV-B and UV-A is imperative along with proper rehydration of the skin.  Researching which product you put on your skin is very important.

I would like to say that this article opened my mind to ask more questions, that is for sure, and I thank you for bringing it here.

Your Friend,

Linda

I couldn't resist voicing an opinion here on this article. In truth I believe it's possible to find conflicting reports on most anything these days, and I'm sure that any dematologists reading this article will cringe in horror. While it's true that our ancestors did spend a LOT more time in the sun, I don't believe they had to deal with the issue of a depleted ozone layer such as we experience today. Expose your eyes enough to those harmful rays now penetrating to the lower levels of our atmosphere and you will damage your retinas. It's also well known that the UV rays can also do chromosomal damage, and consider that our bodies are now host to numerous compounds known to cause chromosomal damage, and the effects are accumulative. They don't say "if you go in the sun you will get skin cancer", they say you are at increased risk. Cumulative effects. I wonder if this article is at all based on scientific data, or simply the conjecture of a lay-professional with an opinion. I'd hazard a guess to say that there are other studies that show a person can still get their daily dose of vitamin D even with protective clothing and/or sunscreen. My view is that things HAVE changed since the days of our ancestors, and if the scientific information points to the need for protection, I would tend to follow that advice.

Hello Linda,

Thank you for your informative post.  I, for one never used sunscreen on a regular basis, but then I am not in the sun an awful lot either.  I suppose moderation is the key.

Actually, this article came as a surprise to me, but I do understand the harm of covering your skin with chemicals.

I definitely agree with you in that natural products need to be researched and made available to the public.  Frankly, I believe there must be natural and safe sunscreen available somewhere and that might be something for me to research.

We live in a world of chemicals, from the food we eat to the very air we breathe and we must do all we can to go back to nature so that we may lead a happy and healthy life.  The toxins we live with every day cause most of the illnesses we suffer from today.  To name a few, cancer, fibromyalgia, asthma, diabetes, today's mental problems which are merely chemical imbalances, ADD, ADHD.  The list goes on to be quite lengthy.  I am a proponent of staying away from chemicals, eating nature's foods, taking the proper supplements and one very important supplement that I take is apple cider vinegar tablets.  This simple little tablet that costs but pennies a day will give your body the perfect alkalinity that you need to rid yourself of disease.  Perfect alkalinity cannot share the same space with disease.  I sound like I'm selling something.  LOL!  I am really not.  Just make sure they are natural.

Maintining one's health is such a complicated issue in todays world.  We must be constantly learning and ever vigilant.
