Hi Kathy
I just wanted to comment on your post Eva. You live in Tasmania which, like Australia, is a secular country. I live in Spain, which is a "multi confessional" country - that is to say multi religious TECHNICALLY and is in fact a Roman Catholic Country, as is Italy and many countries in the world.
Israel, for its part is a country of the Jewish confession. However, to be Jewish does not make you Israeli, but it is considered to be something other than a religion.
It is considered by many to be a race - myself and many other Jews included. In fact it is the only thing that we were in agreement with Hitler on. It is something that I am tremendously proud of too.
Given the fact that the jewish people have suffered persecution at the hands of many nations and that they have forced to flee from one country after another, Israel mades a special concession to people of Jewish birth and religion - we may enter Israel.
My own family can be traced through at least 5 countries in less than 4 generations, and that excludes my own exodus to Spain which was voluntary.
I dont find it strange that there is one country in the world that offers a safe haven to a race of people that many other countries have tried to wipe out for generations. I'm just glad Israel is there.
It's happened in Russia, England (under Oliver Cromwell), Spain during the Inquisition, Germany and all the territories occupied by them during the Second World War, the Arab countries after the partition of Israel in 1948.....the list goes on.
This is not a discussion on the terrible crisis that is now going on in Israel and the Lebanon - just a simple explanation of why so many people passionately support the existance of the State of Israel and their insistance that it should never be allowed to be wiped out.
Saludos Jenny
