MAKING MEANING
"Search me, O God, and know my heart." (Psalm 139:23, NIV)
With the British Open Championship teeing off today, we stand reminded of one
thing: every shot counts.
At the Open Championship, probably more than at any other tournament, every shot
must be carefully placed, with an eye to the next one. In both line and
distance, every shot is hit to a target. And they must all be struck with
purpose. This keeps the competitors from disastrous trouble and sets their
angles for running their approaches to the hole.
With all the distractions built into our world, it is easy to forget how much
each of our actions should also be strong with purpose.
Consider for a moment the songs you sing at church each Sunday. Hymns or praise
choruses, they include lines like these: "I surrender all," "I will give You all
my worship," or "The Lord Almighty reigns."
These songs imply when we sing them that we mean them--that all our worship, all
our lives, are given to the reigning, Almighty God. They imply that all our
actions are committed with a purpose far beyond ourselves. That, friends, is a
lofty implication.
If you and I were to start over tomorrow in our walk with Christ, we would do
well to choose to be far more authentic--to only pray prayers we absolutely mean
and only recite creeds we firmly believe and only sing songs that translate into
the way we are living. I would hope that our chief desire before God would be
authenticity.
Our love for Him, after all, will only be as deep as our honest approach to Him.
It will only be as complete as the thoroughness of the meaning we seek to make
in our lives.
That means we cannot only be men and women of words. We must step beyond the
sound of our own voices and into the realm of faith-driven service in the
kingdom of God. We must be known by God. Then we must show Him to the world as
people forgiven, restored, and acting in the light of His glory.
