The real difference between most marketing and network structures -- including MLM's and the corporate structure you're talking about -- and matrices or pyramids is that pyramid schemes have no actual product for sale. Members are only paid from other members' money. Any MLM or retail operation does provide scaled referral commissions, but at least there's something to be sold to those who hand over their money. When there's no product to sell, someone at the bottom will end up handing over money for nothing.
