I agree there is nothing more delcious than fruit and vegetables picked from your own garden. Even children who turn up their noses at vegetables, have been known to clean up a patch of my climbing peas quicker than a plague of Locusts. In Australia we are very lucky to have cheap and plentiful supplies of fresh fruit and vegetable in the shops, but growing your own is really well worth the effort. Some vegetables taste so different when home grown that you may find you enjoy them after years of leaving them on your plate. Vegetables that taste the most different when home grown include beetroot, broad beans cabbage ,celery, french beas, peas, sweetcorn and ofcourse Tomatoes. Even if you dont have a large garden most vegetables can be successfully grown in containers, given enough sun shine ,a good potting mix and ample feed. Happy Gardening Jenny

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for giving us a peek at what good vegies you can grow down under. I tried tomatoes in pots this year.  It did not work well  as I didn't learn the method to assure success.

However, I have a volunteer tomato plant with 55, yes 55 tomatoes hear me right, growing where I throw my kitchen scraps.  They are the medium sized variety and grow in clusters of 4 or more.   It looks like they are what we call Italian tomatoes.

Children will eat veggies better if they are involved in the growing and tending of the garden.  Being a part of the process builds more enthusiasm to eating what they otherwise would not want to touch.

Wow, Mary, I think it's been longer than I thought since I visited this site! So many fun pictures, Dirk's unbelievable collection of bulbs, the community garden in New York City and all the descriptions of individual gardens - it's a total delight.

I did have a short follow up about community gardens. I described the one I belong to in an earlier post, but I meant to mention that there are 54 such community gardens scattered throughout the city of Seattle. They are called P-Patches and yesterday I read in the paper that a new condominium complex is being built with a P-Patch on the roof. I just loved it!

So good to see this forum keep on keeping on.

Hi Judy,

Don't stay away so long.  Glad we provide you with great entertainment.

Roof gardens,,isn't that neat.  They clean the air, provide a quiet place outdoors away from the busy street and should be a safe place to visit if the tenenants are well screened.  Very nice idea you have shared.

Come back soon. Hope to see you on the friends of the garden too.
