I have recently been asked a few times about FALSE POSITIVES so thought it would be a good idea to break it down for you.
False Positives come about when a test incorrectly reports that it has found a positive result when there wasn't one. This happens because the detection algorithm (a computerized procedure or well-defined instructions for accomplishing a task) errs in its discovery.
The term False Positive is also used when antivirus software wrongly classifies a file as a virus. The incorrect detection may occur either by heuristics or by an incorrect virus "signature" in a database. Similar problems can occur with antispyware software.
What this means is that your antimalware application is saying something is malware when it is not.
Ive found that Avast AntiVirus gives me the least amount of False Positives. They have a great crew that keeps their signature updates practically error free.
