Mark, I used to do that, too. Especially if their spam started with "This is not spam." I would write back and say, just because you say it isn't doesn't mean it isn't.
Some 'marketing gurus' advocate the use of what I called 'bounceback' spam. They sent me their spam, they're fair game for mine, right? Imagine my surprise when I found out the truth! It's still spam. Then I remembered what my momma taught me...two wrongs don't make a right.
Besides, as you pointed out, it's a waste of your breath anyway, lol.
