Learn How To Be a Silent Listener Sometimes.
4/22/2006 7:23:56 PM
From a very early age, we have all been taught the importance of problem solving, right? But, sometimes we can help people more by not trying to find a solution. To be honest, on certain occasions, sitting by and listening silently and with empathy can be a priceless gift. Someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one or a relationship, needs to have time to mourn, not some quick fix solution! They need you to listen to them while they are pouring out their heart to you; they may need a silent hug, not an instant answer. A friend that is ranting and raving about their partner sometimes needs to just let off some a little steam. A smile or a hand on the shoulder may be the best support you can give your friend right then. So, why not try a little silence today, you may find out that it could say more to them than a thousand words ever could! Marilyn L. Ali

Hi Marilyn, I have always felt that listening was an art. You really have to work at being a good listener, but once you master this art, you will find that you have opened a whole other world to yourself. Listening is an art, an pastime, a hobby and somtimes it's just the right thing to do. Thank you, Marilyn. I always like to come and listen at your forums. Your Good Friend Deborah

Hi Marilyn, Thank-you for your words of wisdom about being a silent friend. I believe in the same wisdom and follow it as sometimes I need that friend to be just as silent for me. Have a great weekend Marilyn.

Hi Marilyn, I have always been a good listener more than a talker so can identify with your article. Sometimes just having another friendly person present can provide comfort even if no words are exchanged. DonnaZ
