Being in Fayetteville, North Carolina I have the opportunity to mingle with the Heroes of the 18th Airborne Corps, 82d Airborne Division, 43d Airlift Wing, the numerous tenant organizations and the 1000's of veterans who chose to settle here after their service.
Today at a car show I spoke with Matt who had just returned Thursday from a nine month deployment to Iraq. I also spoke with Craig, who took first place in his class today..he had returned just last week from Afghanistan.
They are "everyday" folks and most, like them, would never want to be publicly honored (no disrespect to your forum is intended Kathy). Being with their children, spouses and extended family, even on a very limited basis, and perserving our rights and freedom is what drives them.
To honor them is to stand, take your hat off and place your hand over your heart when the anthem is played. To honor them is to stand and acknowledge those who have gone before us and preserved our freedom. To honor them is to respect the rights of others and expect your rights to be respected. To honor them is to vote, express yourself, bear arms, own property, and work to make our country better. To honor them is to pursue happiness and enjoy life.
I honestly doubt you will get very many to come forward Kathy, however I'm certain they appreciate your very kind words and the gesture of opening a forum where folks can show their appreciation for our veterans and service men and women.
