Prague Spring is one of famous music festivals of Evrope. Why? Prague has many possibilities for concerts with super accoustic. It is very hard to find something similar in other towns of world. Did You ever heard some of best concerts in church, with the historical organ??? Prague Spring is official action in high level. But prague citizen and visitors too have many possibilities in regular concerts, f.e. in church of st. Jakub or church of st. Mikulas (Nikolas?). I had great impessions by unordinary concerts, f.e. organ + viola. Miroslav P.S. During this Easter more than 350.000 foreign visitors were in Prague!!!Welcome! We are happy of everybody "in peace comming".

Hi, Sarska, You should be writing the cover notes for the new CDs that are constantly being issued of Smetana's works. I won't say that he is one of my favourites because some passages in his music can be very pedestrian but, by careful programming of my CD player, he can certainly beat Wagner for dramatics. Wagner is all wind and fire while Smetana has this plus a subtlety that pleases the romantic ear. Maybe you should add a page to your web site and promote Smetana and Januschek - two great but very different composers - and sell their CDs? Regards

Smetana war Sohn eines Bierbrauers und wurde auf den Namen Friedrich Smetana getauft. Als Erwachsener hat er den Vornamen bewusst gegen die tschechische Namensform Bedřich getauscht. Smetana bekam früh Klavierunterricht. Von 1843 bis 1847 war er in Prag als Musiklehrer tätig, studierte Klavier, gefördert vom Direktor des Prager Konservatoriums Johann Friedrich Kittl (1806–1868) und ausgebildet von Josef Proksch (1794–1864). Proksch, Kittl, Smetana und der Musikhistoriker August Wilhelm Ambros (1816–1876) bildeten zusammen eine musikalische patriotische Gruppe, die den Ideen der Neuromantik – wie Richard Wagner – anhing. Ebenfalls wie sein Vorbild Wagner nahm Smetana 1848 an den revolutionären Kämpfen teil, doch eröffnete er zugleich in Prag seine eigene Musikschule. 1856 verließ Smetana jedoch aus politischen Gründen seine Heimat, um in Göteborg (Schweden) die Philharmonische Gesellschaft zu leiten. Nach dem Ende des österreichischen Absolutismus kehrte Smetana 1861 nach Prag zurück und arbeitete rastlos im nationalen Diensteifer für seine tschechische Nation. Der neue Aufschwung führte 1861 zur Gründung des patriotischen Gesangvereins Hlahol, 1862 wurde das České Prozatímní Divadlo (Tschechisches Interimstheater Prag) geöffnet, schließlich 1863 der tschechische Künstlerverein Umělecká Beseda. Grabstein auf dem Vyšehrader FriedhofSmetana war von 1863 bis 1865 Leiter des Gesangvereins Hlahol, von 1864 bis 1869 Dirigent der tschechischen Philharmonischen Konzerte, von 1864 bis 1865 Musikkritiker an der Zeitung Národní listy, von 1863 bis 1870 Vorsitzender der Musikabteilung des Vereins Umělecká Beseda und von 1866 bis 1874 als Nachfolger Karl Komzáks Erster Kapellmeister des tschechischen Interimstheaters – České Prozatimní Divadlo. Im Jahre 1874 wurde Smetana schwer krank und taub und zog sich aus der Öffentlichkeit weitgehend zurück; er arbeitete jedoch trotz seiner Taubheit als Komponist weiter. Er litt an starken Ohrgeräuschen (Tinnitus), und kurz vor seinem Tod wurde der erschöpfte Smetana noch in eine psychiatrische Klinik eingeliefert, in der er kurze Zeit später, am 12.
