Hi Kathy,
My mother recently told me something very important because she thinks she won't be around much longer...she told me that even though someone may be a good friend or relative, don't spend too much time with people who are constantly dwelling in their problems because those things will keep you awake at night, and we have to spend our thoughts on ourselves and our own family.
That may sound a little selfish, but my mom's mother died shortly before my parents wedding, and my mom spent a lot of her time worrying about her 2 teenage brothers, so much that her doctor told her to not focus so much on other people, to focus on her new marriage and first baby. Anyway, mom's brothers turned out good, they both got good jobs and settled down.
I think saying a genuine daily prayer for people and giving them advice is the best we can do. Don't let other peoples problems weigh down your own joys in life.
Every moment is a decision, everything we say and the way we say it is a choice, and people can do their best to fix their own problems if they are motivated to figure out what's wrong and take positive actions.
