Fatal Laurens County shooting victim’s wife files federal lawsuit
David Hooks

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The wife of a Dublin man who was shot and killed by Laurens County Sheriff’s deputies in September 2014 has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit.

Teresa Hooks claims there wasn’t enough evidence for deputies to search her house. David Hooks was shot and killed during the raid.

Last June, a grand jury found there wasn’t enough evidence to file criminal charges in the case.

The complaint claims Rodney Garrett stole guns and a Lincoln Aviator car from the Hooks’ home on September 23. Garrett was arrested and charged with burglary the following day.

Garrett was a self-confessed meth addict and had approximately 20 grams of meth and scales in his possession at the time of his arrest, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges Garrett told Laurens County Sheriff’s deputies he took those items from a truck at the Hooks’ property when he committed the burglary.

The Hooks’ Family attorney writes “neither Brewer nor any other officer of the Laurens County Sheriff’s Department ever corroborated Garrett’s claim that the meth and scales of which he had possession and control of had originated from Hooks’ property.”

The lawsuit also mentions Sheriff Bill Harrell as a defendant. It claims Sheriff Harrell “harbored personal resentment against [David Hooks] and, upon learning of the Garrett allegations, sought to find a way to seize [David Hooks’] assets through improper and unconstitutional means.”

Laurens County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Brewer used Garrett’s information about stealing the meth and scales from the Hooks’ property to get a search warrant, according to the lawsuit.

Hooks’ attorney claims a Special Response Team was called to execute the search warrant at 11 p.m on September 24 and officers knew David Hooks was known to legally possess multiple firearms.

“Numerous less intrusive means, other than those utilized, should have been employed in this situation, but were not,” writes the attorney.

The lawsuit says the officers “failed to properly execute a knock and announce warrant when Deputy Tyler Jackson prematurely breached the rear door of the [residence]” and other deputies follow “indiscriminately firing their weapons through the floor, walls and ceiling of the home.”

Deputies fired 23 shots inside the home and Hooks was hit 3 times, according to the lawsuit. The attorney claims Hooks was “conscious for several hours, suffering excruciating pain and anguish from the gunshot wounds” and his last words were “help me.”

Hooks’ wife is asking for money to compensate for her suffering as well as Hooks’ medical and funeral expenses. She also wants the case to have a trial by jury.

Why the Pre-Med Student Who Found Prince Dead Could Face Drug Charges

Provided by TIME Inc. Andrew Kornfeld, the son of the California addiction specialist who was hired to treat Prince, could face legal charges for possessing a prescription drug used to help kick opiate addiction, a top Minnesota criminal defense attorney tells PEOPLE.

Kornfeld was at Prince's Paisley Park estate when the singer was found dead in an elevator. The pre-med student – who was sent to Minnesota by his father, Dr. Howard Kornfeld, to speak with Prince about addiction to prescription painkillers – made the 911 call to authorities, according to the Kornfeld family's attorney.

Kornfeld was on the scene in his capacity as a consultant for his father's California outpatient addiction clinic Recovery Without Walls. Recovery Without Walls had been hired to Prince's representative to begin emergency treatment on the star of prescription drug addiction, lawyer William Mauzy said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Kornfeld was carrying a starter dose of Suboxone, a drug with buprenorphine, which is used to treat opiate addiction, Mauzy said. The drug is considered a controlled substance in Minnesota – similar to narcotics like Percocet.

Prince’s Vault of Unreleased Songs Was Drilled Open

The holy grail of all things Prince. The Paisley Park vault containing a collection of Prince’s unreleased recordings was recently drilled open by the company given temporary custody over his estate, Minneapolis' ABC News affiliate KSTP-TV reports.

Inside, there is enough music to release an album a year for the next century, according to the station.

“We could put out more work in a month than most people could do in a year or more,” Susan Rogers, Prince’s former recording engineer, told Good Morning America, noting that the music legend had produced volumes of work in the ‘80s.

Bremer Trust was the company that forcibly opened the vault, to which only Prince had the code.

It was given temporary authority over the Chanhassen, Minnesota, estate after authorities discovered that the “Purple Rain” singer had died without a valid will.

As previously reported, the value of Prince’s estate is estimated to be about $300 million.

According to TMZ, his assets could be divided among his living brothers and sisters — Tyka Nelson, John Nelson, Norrine Nelson, Sharon Nelson, Alfred Jackson and Omarr Baker.

Prince was divorced at the time of the death, from ex-wife Manuela Testolini, and had no children.

Prince’s Former Band Reuniting To Honour The Late Singer

27 April 2016

Prince’s former backing band, The Revolution, are planning to reunite to pay tribute to the late singer, who tragically passed away last week.

The Revolution - Bobby Z, Brown Mark, Matt Fink, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman - took to Facebook to announce their plans to reunite in honour of Prince, who was found unresponsive in a lift in his Paisley Park home last week (April 21).

In the video, posted on Brown Mark’s page, Wendy said: “We have decided, after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of Prince, that we would like to come out and do some shows, and we want to let you know that we’ll be there soon.”

Members of 3rdeyegirl, Prince’s backing band until his death, have also been paying tribute to the legend.

“Thursday the earth made a hiccup and left us all a little bit poorer. I dont know how to begin to describe the magnitude of this loss and I still have a hard time grasping what has happened. It has been some very difficult days -for me and I know for so many people with me.

“An icon a legend and a genius without compare is now gone. A man who loved, lived and WAS music. But also a deeply caring man with a tremendously big heart and generosity for the people around him and a great concern for the injustice on this earth.

“A beautiful soul and a man who wanted to make the world a better place -who gathered people of all ethnicities and nationalities with his message of love. It has been such an honor and privilige to have been close to this greatness and I will forever cherish the beautiful moments we shared.

[Instagram/@idanielsenbass]

“I have lost a dear friend, a Mentor, a big brother, ping pong buddy, a teacher, a laughing partner and caretaker. And my number one musical influence and inspiration ever! And we all have lost the personification of music and love -and a special frequency is now missing here on earth.”
