I must say this one gem of a painting was a novelty for me, as I had never seen it. The work on the shawl she wears is wonderful yet not its only merit of course. Her cute face, her hands, each gesture she makes is a delight to see.

In his late years, Bouguereau taught a few very special alumni who under his guidance would develop an academic style almost identical to his own. One of them would become pretty known (in fact, a celebrity): Pierre-Auguste Cot (see immediately below one of his most exquisite works). Other was Elizabeth James Gardner, a young lady who would in time become Bouguereau's wife; she painted Young Girl at the Well (below it).

I don't know how I could miss out on this most impressive, mysterious painting... of 1872!

... Also, if I had to choose a favorite among the huge production of Bouguereau's wonderful works I would for sure be in trouble, so vast and exquisite was it all! A little by chance then, here I will select the below painting... of 1871!
