If Wikipedia is not mistaken, gold is non-corrosive and its properties as a dense, soft, malleable and ductile metal remain when exposed to air or water. In fact, it can only be dissolved by 'aqua regia' and alkaline solutions of cyanide (unlike silver and base metals, which are also dissolved by nitric acid), all of which make it a most precious and durable metal.
