This is an unfinished yet magnificent 1635 - 1636 portrait of the renowned Spanish sculptor Juan Martinez Montañés by Diego Velazquez. A friend of Velazquez despite the difference in their ages (67 vs 37 years old of Velazquez), Martinez Montañés is shown making a clay bust of Philip IV of Spain as a model for an equestrian statue in bronze now on plaza de Oriente in Madrid (though the bust itself is only in outline, since the painting is unfinished).

This extraordinary portrait of the prince Baltasar Carlos on horseback is certainly uncommon in Velazquez's production. Its originality resides in that it incorporates a most special scenario: the Royal Mews, where the young prince was given his daily class of equitation, and a whole retinue including the Count-Duke of Olivares and others. In the collection of the Duke of Westminster, London.

At this point, I would like to present three extraordinary portraits by Diego Velazquez. The characters portrayed do not belong to the royalty but they certainly lived and worked in the royal premises and in all likelihood, they owe to Velazquez their ever becoming known to posterity.

Diego Velazquez - Portrait of Pablo de Valladolid
(oil on canvas, 1636 -1637)

Diego Velazquez - The Buffoon Calabacillas
(oil on canvas, 1637 -1639)

Diego Velazquez - The Jester Barbarroja
(oil on canvas, 1637 - 1640)

These two other characters, magnificently portrayed by Velazquez, do belong to posterity: at least Aesop, whose fables have survived to our days, is widely known even now. Menippos, a Cynic and satirist in old Greece, and none of whose works is extant, is said to have committed suicide after losing all his money.
