This exquisite Immaculate Conception was painted circa 1618, i.e. probably when Diego was nineteen - an amazing accomplishment for someone that young. A notable feature of the Virgin is, her face is not the usual ideal face you see in most great masters' portraits of her but one that you will likely see in the street or a restaurant or a public library in any big modern city.

A third outstanding master work of poignant religious theme was this well-known piece painted circa 1620, 'The Supper at Emmaus', treasured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York.

Here is one of the best known master works of Velazquez, 'The Waterseller of Seville', which would become inmensely popular in time. It is treasured in the Wellington Museum of London, in the United Kingdom.

This extraordinary early work by Velazquez is a portrait of an unknown character thought to be the artist's brother Juan, also a painter.

Around 1620, the Spanish court moved from Valladolid to Madrid, where Velázquez entered the king's service. Besides his bodegones, of which a fine example is the Waterseller of Seville (see our previous post), it was his mastery of portraiture that the king appreciated (see here). Below is his magnificent Felipe IV treasured in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
