These portraits of Felipe IV and his new wife, the queen doña Mariana de Austria, painted in the same period, may not be as appealing as other portraits in these pages but are magnificent all the same.

The authorship of many famous works previously attributed to Velazquez has later on been debated; in some cases, they have been considered copies made by his son in law and pupil Juan Mazo or else by other lesser artists. Among them, however, there are some that I just cannot admit as belonging to this category - their quailty is so high. I will show them in this and in coming posts.

This masterpiece is actually no imitation but an autograph repetition of the official portrait Velazquez had painted for Felipe IV. In it, the king is shown wearing a gold chain and the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

This other portrait of Felipe IV ("con jubón amarillo") was rejected by López-Rey and Brown but defended by Julian Gallego when exhibited in 1990 at the Museo del Prado. Considered by most critics as an adaptation of Velazquez's portrait of Felipe IV preserved in the Museo, it clearly shows Rubens' influence.

The two paintings below have often been considered Velazquez self-portraits and with good reason, especially the bottom one which is related to one of the characters in
The Surrender of Breda
(see page 7 of this thread).
