MITCH MCCONNELL: Obama's New Carbon Rule Is A 'Dagger In The Heart Of The American Middle Class'

Mitch McConnell

AP

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell thinks the Obama administration's new EPA regulations won't just cut carbon emissions.

The Kentucky Republican thinks they're also going to slice up the middle class, saying in a statement Monday the new rules would be a "dagger in the heart of the American middle class" that would crumble the fragile U.S. economy.

"Today’s announcement is a dagger in the heart of the American middle class, and to representative Democracy itself," McConnell said. "Already reeling from the painful effects of Obamacare, the American people are now being told they have to shoulder the burdens of the President’s latest ‘solution’ in the form of higher costs, fewer jobs, and a less reliable energy grid."

McConnell also suggested the fact the regulations were coming from the Environmental Protection Agency rather than Capitol Hill represented an "end-run around Congress" by Obama.

"The fact that the president plans to do all this through an end-run around Congress only highlights his contempt for the wishes of the public and a system of government that was devised precisely to restrain an action like today’s," said McConnell.

The new regulations aim to force power plants to cut their emissions by as much 30% from 2005 levels by 2030. The EPA estimates the rule will cost approximately $5.5 billion in 2020, vs. net climate and health "benefits" of $26 billion to $45 billion to the economy.

The rule will likely have a disproportional effect on McConnell's home state of Kentucky, where the coal industry is a major force and McConnell is locked in a close election battle with Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes. Grimes also denounced the rule Monday, calling it an "overreach" and saying she will fight the Obama administration's "attack" on coal if she wins the seat. The topic figures to be a major point of contention in the race.

Hundreds of coal plants, from where most of America's energy comes, will have to comply with the rule. Kentucky was the third-largest coal-producing state in 2012, the last year of data on record by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Almost 93% of Kentucky's net electricity generation came from coal-fired plants.

It's likely states like Kentucky that rely on coal- and gas-powered plants will have to do more to contribute to the national 30% reduction by 2030.

McConnell highlighted the potentially disproportionate effect on Kentucky in his statement, painting the new rule as an appeasement by the Obama administration for political supporters in states like California and New York.

"By imposing these draconian new rules on the nation’s coal industry, President Obama and every other liberal lawmaker in Washington who quietly supports them is also picking regional favorites, helping their political supporters in states like California and New York while inflicting acute pain on states like Kentucky," McConnell said. "The impact on individuals and families and entire regions of the country will be catastrophic, as a proud domestic industry is decimated — and many of its jobs shipped overseas. ... In short, the downstream effects of today’s announcement will be staggering for millions."

Spain's Monarchy in Real Trouble the People Want a Republic as King Abdicates Leaves Son on Throne. The People Are Outraged as Another Centralized Government Fails

Spain: Calls For A Republic After King Abdicates

Anti-monarchist protesters across Spain have taken to the streets calling for a referendum on the future of the monarchy in the wake of King Juan Carlos I's decision to abdicate.

Tens of thousands took part in demonstrations in towns and cities demanding a vote - and some even the immediate proclamation of a republic.

"I came here because I believe we should at least vote in a referendum," said Hector Munoz, a 25-year-old student demonstrating in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square.

"Three out of four Spaniards have not decided to have this (political) system so I think it would be fair."

The anti-monarchist sentiment continued as the process that will see the king's son Prince Felipe accede to the throne was discussed by Spanish ministers.

Spain does not have a law that precisely regulates abdication and succession, but it is believed the transition will be brought about by the passing of legislation through parliament, spearheaded by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's ruling conservative People's Party.

Juan Carlos announced his plans to abdicate on Monday after nearly 40 years on the throne.

The 76-year-old king, who oversaw his country's transition from dictatorship to democracy following the death of General Francisco Franco, has had health problems in recent years.

The monarch's reputation has been tarnished by scandals including a furore over an elephant-hunting trip Juan Carlos took during the financial crisis, and a long-running corruption investigation into his daughter Princess Cristina's business dealings.

He said his decision was motivated by "a drive for renewal, to overcome and correct mistakes and open the way to a decidedly better future".

ICE shipping planeloads of illegal immigrants to Massachusetts

A Boston TV station has discovered that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been flying planeloads of illegal immigrants toMassachusetts over the past couple of weeks.

ICE officials confirmed to Fox 25 on Friday that at least six commercial, agency-owned charter flights have transported detainees to the Boston area. The agency told the station that moving detainees from the southern borders to other areas of the country is routine.

“There are a number of concerns,” said Jessica Vaughn spokesperson for the Center for Immigration Studies, adding that the crisis at the border is distracting U.S. agencies from their regular mission to deport illegal immigrants convicted of crimes.

Recent reports found that in May, ICE released 36,000 immigrants with criminal convictions into communities for a number of reasons, Vaughn said.

“This influx of people is a direct result of recent policies,” she said. “According to border patrol’s own intelligence, what the immigrants are telling them, is that they’re coming now because there’s a new law that gives them permission to stay.”

When Fox 25 questioned Massachusetts Gov. Duval Patrick about the flights, he said he was just hearing about the situation.

“I don’t know anything about it,” Patrick said.

“How does the governor not know anything about this?” the news anchor asked.
