Roger, I have often thought how you convey those emotions to the paper or canvas. Since only rarely have I portrayed people I cannot know for sure, but I have portrayed myself at a mirror and it occurs to me that whatever worked there - at least partially - was that I was deeply and entirely identified with my own emotions, which only talks to logic. So other than being an experienced and accomplished artist, I guess the main ingredient to transmit those emotions to the medium you are using, and thence to the viewer, is your ability to identify yourself with your sitters, their circumstances and emotions or, in other words, to feel empathetic to them.
