"High Vista"

John Buxton - High Vista (oil on linen, date unspecified)

"High Vista
represents the early pioneer families who first ventured over and beyond the great Appalachian Mountain chain to develop homesteads and a new life that would someday encompass the entire Western Frontier laid out before them. Throughout this expanse, however, were Native American nations who would prove as hostile as the untamed environment. This couple has a hard and uncertain future ahead...yet they were to be, like those to follow, the backbone for expansion throughout this rugged region."

Miguel,

I was already impressed with the lichens on the rocks and then I noticed the little figures engraved in the rocks DEAD CENTRE of the painting.

Wonderful stuff.

John Buxton said this:

Since I live in Western Pennsylvania, how could I not be enthusiastic about the aura radiating from the rocks and rivers that witnessed the 21 year old George Washington, his scout and interpreters, and the natives that stalked them. Right here in my backyard, so to speak, so much has happened that influenced the course of a developing America of the 18th century. How could I not want to paint it? In 1994, I began.

It says so much.
