RE: GREAT MASTERS OF PAINTING - WILLIAM TURNER

So sorry dear friends, but two more 'oldies' here. The first one is pretty old. See the footnote on the second.

William Turner - Dunstanburgh Castle: The Lilburn Tower at Sunrise
(grapfite and watercolor on paper, 1797)

William Turner - Raby Castle, the Seat of the Earl of Darlington
(oil on canvas, 1817) (*)

(*) This work, commissioned by the third earl of Darlington, is one of Turner's most successful "house portraits." It is also one of the first works in which he fully exploits the dramatic potential of the sky. The earl, an avid sportsman who reportedly hunted six days a week, may have influenced Turner's rendering of the scene. When the painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1818, it included a mounted huntsman in the foreground. Turner subsequently painted over this figure after his work had been denounced as a "detestable fox-hunting scene."

Dear friends, three more great paintings here.
All three are from the 1840's, all of them are exquisite, but my favorite is the one in the middle.

William Turner - Waves Breaking against the Wind
(oil on canvas, c.1840)

William Turner - The Scarlet Sunset (watercolor and
gouache on paper, c.1830-40)

William Turner - Venice: Looking across the Lagoon at Sunset
(watercolor on paper, 1840)

Dear friends, all things must reach their end and unfortunately, this thread is no exception. So following the natural law, I will dedicate the next couple of posts to those few Turner paintings, no more than a couple or three, that are generally considered to be his latest. Right now, however, I want to post this gem of a painting that evidences how ahead of his time he was in the matter of artistic realization. (*)

William Turner - Interior at Petworth
(watercolor on paper, c. 1828)

(*) I was about to say 'artistic exploration' but while Turner certainly explored different artistic expressions, he in fact produced many works of art that many years later would certainly have made many cultivators of impressionism happy had they painted them.

These two extraordinary master works,
obviously intended as a pair, were exhibited in the same year 1846.

William Turner - Undine Giving the Ring to Massaniello,
Fisherman of Naples
(oil on canvas, exhibited 1846)

William Turner - The Angel Standing in the Sun
(oil on canvas, exhibited 1846)

Wonderful images.

They really have his style written in every brushstroke.
