I will always remember "Freedom" (Motherless Child) as the powerful theme that got Woodstock started, at least in the movie. How exhilarated I was from the start thanks to Richie Havens' inimitable style and vitality. And not only I, but all the people filling the theater and, of course, the thousands in Woodstock clearly felt like that. Because not only was he a superb musician and singer but a great innovator as well. If I had to award the biggest prize to an only participant in the continued show, it would be him.

Later on I lost track of him and his career but actually never forgot him, as he definitely was the star at Woodstock. Sure there were so many stars there but that I remember, with perhaps Jimmy Hendrix' only exception, none quite like him. To think of Woodstock was to think of him and vice versa.

How sad to learn about his passing after so many years. Well, I am glad he will be remembered by millions across the world at least.
