Sorry Roger and friends, but after mentioning it in such encomiastic terms (and
even though it is not treasured in the Frick Museum but in the Louvre) I could not resist posting this superb masterwork by Ingres.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres - La Grand Odalisque (oil on canvas, 1814)

One of the most treasured masterpieces at the Frick Collection is "St. Francis in the Desert" by Giovani Bellini, who started it in 1475 and finished it in around 1480. Here in this video we can enjoy a brief introduction to it with Colin B. Bailey, Associate Director & Peter Jay Sharp Chief, Curator.

And here is the master work itself, which I am posting without further comment.

So wonderful.

Besides the beauty and skill evident these gems are reminders of man's simpler lifestyle and a time when community was a part of everyday life. As now there were the have's and have nots but there was a natural support among communities.

Modern life has brought many of us more comfort but we still can't really better the observation and imagination of these masters.

Wonderful.
