Hi Helen,

Thanks for another good share.
The first year we moved to this house during summer, after about two weeks ants came out of no where and were all over my kitchen counters. The house had been empty for a few months I think.

I did a search and found that borax and water mixed to a paste would do the trick, the ants have left.

This year I had mouse inside that I put down mouse pellets and they have gone and no sign of the mouse and now I have bugs that I think they may be cockroaches and I do not know where these awful bugs came from either. They are not touching borax paste, sprays do not work and I do not like sprays at the best of times because it makes it smelly and hard to breath and more poison gases floating around. When I see them I sweep them into the kitchen sink and pour hot water on them which they do not like and they die, but more are coming. Know any suggestions from your bag of tips and wrinkles?

Hi Evelyn

A few years ago I had an infestation of ants in my apartment. The ants were everywhere especially on the kitchen counter where there were some crumbs. They were on my desk crawling on my arms when I was at the computer and also on the floor.

I had a dish sitting on the counter which was waiting to be washed. It had a film of some butter on it and the ants would go onto the dish (it was a flat saucer). I noticed that as soon as their feet hit any of the greasy surfaces on the dish, they would just turn around and rush away. This made me wonder if they would stop coming into apartment if I painted some vegetable oil on the floor, on the patio tracks and the patio floor along the patio door where they were coming in. I still would have to find a way to get rid of the ants inside, I thought, ...but lo and behold, the next morning when I got up there was not one ant anywhere. It's been about 4 years now and not one ant has come back. It's as if the oiliness is imprinted in their memory because I only painted the oil onto the floor once and the greasiness of the oil will have been gone a long time ago.

People should pay me for this gem of information ;))

If they come back, I will just paint the oil on the floor again. I am so pleased to have discovered this as it is a totally non-toxic way to get rid of them and the cost is just pennies. Actually the artist's brush cost me $1.00 at the dollar store.

So if you can figure out where they are getting into the pump mechanism just paint vegetable oil all over the place on the way to it and see what happens. If it works for you, you should probably do it once a year or so.

Then let me know how it worked out. Maybe not all ants are the same.

Sorry Mark, this has been a hectic day and the ants got in my well pump again and shorted out a switch which required a plumber and he told me what to buy at Home Depot to take care of the problem. I certainly hope so. Thankfully I had bottled water to make my coffee with and clean my teeth with.

Amanda I'm sure Helen will pull something out of her bag of tricks for you but I know one thing that will work and as far as I know they're nontoxic and don't put off any kind of odors. You can carry roaches in, in a sack of potatoes or anything really. Sometimes it's a real mystery where the bugs come from. We got an infestion of water bugs several years ago when we bought carpet from a warehouse in an old building, evidently their eggs were in the carpet. We tried everything, even the very poisonous sprays, set off bug bombs etc but nothing worked until they came out with the roach motels. I bought several packs and put them in the kitchen cabinets, in the bathrooms and etc and in no time they were gone. They work better than anything I've ever tried. When my son and daughter were in college they rented an apartment in a huge old house off campus and it too was infested with these roaches. I bought several packs and I guess this killed them in the whole house, according to one of their neighbors. All the bugs came to their apartment to feast on the goodies put out for them and in no time the whole house was bug free. They used to come 6 in a pack but it's been so long since I bought any I'm not sure how they come now but they're very inexpensive. I used to buy mine at the grocery store where they had a section for fly sprays and etc. These roaches like to be around where water is, so the best place to put the roach motels is in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Hi Amanda

Actually I don't know what you can do about roaches except to do what Evelyn suggests. I like to think I know everything and have all the answers ...psst, don't tell everyone, but I don't. That's why I only write about things I know. It makes me look smarter than I really am. :))

It was just a fluke that I discover the way to get rid of my ants.

I never have been infested with roaches and hope I never am. If it happened I would use Evelyn's idea. I might also do a Search both at Google and Yahoo. Answers.com also has some interesting ideas from time to time.

Remember if the little critters have been around, they probably laid some eggs, too. If I thought so, I would iron my carpet with a very hot setting but being careful not to burn the carpet. Insects die at 140 degrees F so they say. If I thought I had bedbugs laying eggs on my mattress, I would iron it, too. I might consider buying a steam machine that had a high temperature setting and steam or iron everyday until they were all gone. I would also buy a plastic mattress cover and zip it shut after I put it on the mattress and then I would tape the zipper shut with some good tape and I would let those monsters DIE !!

Hello Helen,
This is the first place I have lived in that had roaches, in fact I did not know what they were when they first showed up and I had to Google search bugs on image to try and find them.
We have one small section of carpeting down the hall and into the spare bedrooms while the lounge and other end have laminated wooden floors.
The back porch deck has the cracks between the floor boards for expansion and contraction although the walls are screen mesh, bugs can still get in through the floor. They possibly came in through there and with the dogs fenced yard right there too and they get under the porch which is mostly open for shelter and they dig up the ground, with pot holes everywhere, they could have scared up anything.
There is far more creepy crawlies in the States than I ever saw back in New Zealand, only had to deal with house flie, occasional blow flies, non poisonous spiders. Just as well I am not a scaredy cat or I would be freaked out mess by now with what I have dealt with since relocating to the States.. LOL
I am going into town today so I will pick up a roach motel and put it under my sink cupboard and hopefully get rid of these pests.
When James and I bought our new mattress & base about 4 years ago now, we also bought 2 special mattress covers that prevents bugs getting through, it has been wonderful in other ways too, as a few times I have had to pull off all the bedding to wash because a dog has been sick or peed on the bed which has gone right through and stopped at the mattress cover.
Each season I wash the quilts (I have lighter and heavier) and fold and put into black garbage bags which I have read will suffocate dust mites and other nasties and place in our spare bedroom closet. I have spare bedding all in garbage bags sealed tight.

Happy Friday friends and I wish for each of you a great weekend. You know it never ceases to amaze me when I get something in my inbox from a good friend that just seems to be what the doctor ordered, like this one. I hope it touches each of you, as it did me. :)

This is awesome...............Enjoy
I hope you will enjoy it half as much as I have!!
Don't start reading this one until you've got a minute, don't just
'scan' over it.. It deserves some time for reflection.

GOD LIVES UNDER MY BED

I envy Kevin. My brother, Kevin, thinks God lives under his bed.
At least that's what I heard him say one night.
He was praying out loud in his dark bedroom, and I stopped to listen,
'Are you there, God?' he said. 'Where are you? Oh, I see. Under the bed....'
I giggled softly and tiptoed off to my own room. Kevin's unique perspectives are often a source of amusement. But that night something else lingered long after the humor. I realized for the first time the very different world Kevin lives in.
He was born 30 years ago, mentally disabled as a result of difficulties during labor. Apart from his size (he's 6-foot-2), there are few ways in which he is an adult.
He reasons and communicates with the capabilities of a 7-year-old, and he always will. He will probably always believe that God lives under his bed, that Santa Claus is the one who fills the space under our tree every Christmas and that airplanes stay up in the sky because angels carry them.
I remember wondering if Kevin realizes he is different. Is he ever dissatisfied with his monotonous life? Up before dawn each day, off to work at a workshop for the disabled, home to walk our cocker spaniel, return to eat his favorite macaroni-and-cheese for dinner, and later to bed.
The only variation in the entire scheme is laundry, when he hovers excitedly over the washing machine like a mother with her newborn child.
He does not seem dissatisfied.
He lopes out to the bus every morning at 7:05, eager for a day of simple work.
He wrings his hands excitedly while the water boils on the stove before dinner, and he stays up late twice a week to gather our dirty laundry for his next day's laundry chores..
And Saturdays - oh, the bliss of Saturdays! That's the day my Dad takes Kevin to the airport to have a soft drink, watch the planes land, and speculate loudly on the destination of each passenger inside. 'That one's goin' to Chi-car-go! ' Kevin shouts as he claps his hands.
His anticipation is so great he can hardly sleep on Friday nights.
And so goes his world of daily rituals and weekend field trips.
He doesn't know what it means to be discontent.
His life is simple..
He will never know the entanglements of wealth of power, and he
does not care what brand of clothing he wears or what kind of food
he eats. His needs have always been met, and he never worries
that one day they may not be.
His hands are diligent. Kevin is never so happy as when he is working.
When he unloads the dishwasher or vacuums the carpet, his heart is
completely in it.
He does not shrink from a job when it is begun, and he does not leave a job until it is finished. But when his tasks are done, Kevin knows how to relax.. He is not obsessed with his work or the work of others. His heart is pure.
He still believes everyone tells the truth, promises must be kept, and when you are wrong, you apologize instead of argue.
Free from pride and unconcerned with appearances, Kevin is not afraid
to cry when he is hurt, angry or sorry. He is always transparent, always
sincere. And he trusts God.
Not confined by intellectual reasoning, when he comes to the Lord, he
comes as a child. Kevin seems to know God - to really be friends with
Him in a way that is difficult for an 'educated' person to grasp. God seems like his closest companion.
In my moments of doubt and frustrations with my beliefs, I envy the
security Kevin has in his simple faith.
It is then that I am most willing to admit that he has some divine
knowledge that rises above my mortal questions.
It is then I realize that perhaps he is not the one with the handicap..
I am. My obligations, my fear, my pride, my circumstances - they all
become disabilities when I do not trust them to God's care.
Who knows if Kevin comprehends things I can never learn? After all,
he has spent his whole life in that kind of innocence, praying after dark
and soaking up the goodness and love of God.
And one day, when the mysteries of heaven are opened, and we are
all amazed at how close God really is to our hearts, I'll realize that God
heard the simple prayers of a boy who believed that God lived under his bed.
Kevin won't be surprised at all!
