When I saw this story a few days ago, about this lady and her 1964 Mercury Comet, it brought back a lot of fond memories because I had a 1965 red Mercury Comet, two door hard top with black leather interior. I can't remember how long I kept it but did eventually sell it and bought something else, can't remember what though, but it is one of the few cars I owned that I can remember vividly.

Florida Grandma Retires Her ’64 Mercury Comet After 576,000 Miles

Grandma retires car after 576,000 miles

Go ahead and brag about your 10-year-old car. Rachel Veitch can beat that — the 93-year-old grandmother has had her Mercury Comet Caliente for almost half a century.

She bought the car — which she calls her Chariot — for $3,200 when it was new in 1964. But after racking up 576,000 miles and appearing in auto shows and even on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,’ Rachel is hanging up her keys.

“I am legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot,” she said. “They don’t have to take it away. I would not dream of driving that car again.”

Veitch, a retired nurse who’s been something of a local celebrity in her hometown of Orlando, FL., for years, says the car has outlasted three sets of shocks — and three marriages. She happily tooled around in it until just last month, when she realized her eyesight had deteriorated to the point where she could no longer safely drive.

She’s taken meticulous care of her Chariot, which has gone through 18 batteries, eight mufflers and countless oil changes. So what will happen to it now?

Rachel said she’d like to see if known car-aficionado Leno wants it, but when asked if any of her four children, nine grandchildren or 11 great-grandchildren had shown any interest in taking it off her hands, she had a quick reply.

“It wouldn’t matter if they did, they’re not going to get it. They couldn’t take care of it like I did.”

Take a look at a news report on Rachel’s amazing car from a few years back below.

Well, after I posted the article I regretted having done it, particularly today being a most special commemoration for most of us; I am afraid I have been very inconsiderate since, as you say, it is nauseating. Again, I am very sorry and will try to bring more cheerful news in the future. :)

Hi Miguel, it's really nauseating when you think of what could be or is in our food. Nothing really surprises me very much anymore, unfortunately. I have gotten to the point where I eat very little meat and try to buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Thanks for the article.

Miguel no apologies are needed, please believe me when I say that and maybe my wording could have been a bit less descriptive. :)You're always welcome with whatever you post and I understood you only wanted to let people know about this. It really is OK. :)

10_1_136.gifHi Evelyn,

I just wanted to stop by and also wish everyone a HAPPY PASSOVER and a HAPPY EASTER. Shirley and I will be having the trditional Ham and Sweet Potatoes. Just in case I may sprinkle some arsenic over it in case they forgot to inject it. Actually, I don't believe that there is anything in our food system that is safe to eat anymore. Animals are being injected, Apple juice now has arsenic in it, vegetables have several poisonous additives and our water supplies are being treated with chemicals as well. Fortunetely, our systems seem to adjust to these different ingredients being introduced into our digestive systems, and tolerate these toxins. I just try to go with the flow. At times I may flow more often then other times.

GOD BLESS YOU

~Mike~
