Hi Evelyn
Snakes can get in the smallest of places and they are strong. My daughter brought home a garter snake one day in the 80's and she wanted to keep it for a pet. I said, "No way." She asked if she could keep it for overnight and I said Ok but the next day she had to let it go. We had to go out that evening so I had her put it in a cardboard box and then we put a piece of plywood on top of that and on top of the plywood we put a good sized rock. Unless it ate through the cardboard it was not getting out ...so I thought.
When we got home, we looked in the box and the snake was gone. There were no holes in the box so it must have squeezed its way out from under the plywood and the rock!! That snake was in the house somewhere and it was almost bedtime. I told my daughter she and I were not going to bed until she found the snake because I didn't want to wake up with a snake crawling all over me. Eventually we found it on the floor under her bed. Of course, she was not allowed to keep the snake overnight because it would get out and could crawl on us so she let it loose outside that evening.
I am not too afraid of harmless snakes but I wouldn't want to wake up with one crawling on me. It's the one that bite that scare me.
Helen PS ...Now that I've really scared you, rest assured that if you have not seen the snake since you moved in, it has probably left. No need to worry. :))
