Bedrich Smetana

(2 March 1824 Litomysl, Bohemia- 12 May 1884 Prague, Bohemia) is considered one of the greatest Czech composers of the 19th century.

Bedrich Smetana was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style which became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood. He is thus widely regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride, for the symphonic cycle Má Vlast ("My Fatherland") which portrays the history, legends and landscape of the composer's native land, and for his First String Quartet From My Life. Smetana was naturally gifted as a pianist, and gave his first public performance at the age of six.

Bedrich Smetana - Vltava

The Vltava is the second symphonic poem of the cycle My Country composer Bedrich Smetana. It describes the flow of Czech longest rivers - the Vltava River. Advice was between 20 November and 8 December 1874. Premiere was fourth April 1875.

Smetana said the Vltava : The composition depicts the course of the Vltava, starting from the first two strands, Hot and Cold Advice, links the two streams into one stream, then the flow of the Vltava River in the forests and the meadows, landscapes, which just celebrated the joyful feast, the night glow moon whirl water nymphs; on nearby rocks off proudly with castles and ruins, the Vltava swirls in Saint John currents, flowing in a wide flow further to Prague, Vysehrad appears, finally disappearing in the distance on its majestic flow of the Elbe.
