Gun Violence Victims Detained, Put Through Background Chechs For Yelling 'Shame On You' At Senators

Written by Igor Volsky

“Shame on you!” Patricia Maisch and Lori Haas yelled in rapid succession at the 46 senators who had just voted to kill a compromise amendment to expand background checks for gun purchases at gun shows or online. The women were sitting in the gallery with a large group of gun violence victims as the Senate responded to the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut by defeating the measure advocates and law enforcement officials consider crucial to keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

The pair has first-hand experience with the consequences of the broken system. In 2011, Maisch was hailed as a hero for disarming Tucson shooter Jared Loughner by preventing him from reloading a fresh magazine. Haas’ daughter Emily was shot twice during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 and survived, leading her to become a proponent of stronger gun regulations. But on Wednesday afternoon, the two women faced tighter scrutiny for interrupting a Senate proceeding than many individuals seeking to purchase guns.

As they left the Senate gallery, a police officer approached and asked them to follow him. The three walked downstairs to a public hallway, where they were peppered with questions: “What’s your name?” “Where are you from?” “What are your Social Security numbers?” The officer left to run a background check on the women, who were instructed to sit on a bench. Another uniformed officer watched over them, even escorted Haas to the bathroom and told her she couldn’t lock the stall door.

Sitting there, waiting for the officer to return, Haas stewed over the failed vote. “I just can’t fathom that these people don’t have a heart,” she told ThinkProgress in a phone interview. “If they had seen, just one miniscule of the pain I’ve seen from the Virginia Tech families and so many other families that I’ve worked with in the last 6 years, they couldn’t help but want to do something about stopping gun violence.”

An hour and a half later, another law enforcement official approached and quizzed the the two women further. He asked them about their intentions and where they were from, why they were in D.C., how long they planned to stay and when they were leaving.

The entire ordeal stretched for almost two hours — approximately 115 minutes longer than a background check at a federal gun dealer. Haas noted the irony of undergoing hours of questioning while permitting gun purchases without any screening at gun shows or online.

“The irony is not lost on me and it’s not lost on the American public,” Haas said. “Very ironic that an hour and a half investigation into two women shouting in the Senate gallery takes place and yet real criminals and other prohibited purchasers get willy nilly access to fire arms.”

Russia sought FBI's help in 2011 to probe Boston suspect

1 hr 22 mins ago

By Tabassum Zakaria and Mark Hosenball

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia asked the FBI in early 2011 to investigate Boston bombing suspectTamerlan Tsarnaev out of concern he had embraced radical Islam and was going to travel to Russia to join underground groups, U.S. law enforcement sources said on Saturday.

Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB, made a request for checks on Tsarnaev - who was killed after a shootout with police on Thursday - to help an investigation of its own, a U.S. government source said.

The Russians were not tipping off the FBI about a plot in the United States or any threat posed to U.S. interests, a law enforcement and national security source said on condition of anonymity.

The fact that there was no warning about an attack in the United States may help shield the Obama administration, spy agencies and law enforcement from criticism that they failed to see the danger from Tsarnaev, 26, and his younger brother, Dzhokhar, who are suspected of carrying out the twin bombings that killed three people and injured over 170 on Monday at the Boston Marathon.

Russia is battling Islamist militants in the volatile North Caucasus where the Tsarnaev brothers - who are ethnic Chechens - have family ties. But the number of tips from Moscow on possible terrorism cases is "not that many," a senior U.S. law enforcement source said.

The FBI said a foreign government had raised the alarm over Tsarnaev but did not comment on whether it was Russia. The bureau said it "did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign" after interviewing Tsarnaev and his family, and checking his travel records and Internet activity in 2011. Those results were given to the foreign government in the summer of 2011, the FBI said.

The FBI found nothing to substantiate Russian allegations that Tsarnaev was a follower of radical Islam who was preparing to travel to Russia to join unspecified radical groups, a national security source said.

Tsarnaev flew to Russia the following year. Official records show he left New York's JFK airport on January 12, 2012 for Moscow and returned to the United States on July 17, 2012. It is unclear what he did while in Russia or whether he traveled elsewhere during that period.

Republican U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher said Tsarnaev may well have been trained overseas by "radical elements."

"The two young men directly involved in this terrorist attack were both Chechen and clearly influenced by radical Islam. One of them may well have been trained with terrorist weapons by radical elements overseas," said Rohrabacher, a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.

"The Chechen connection indicates we should work more closely with Russia and other nations who are also suffering the same kind of mayhem we have seen in Boston," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has not commented on the identity of the two suspects, who moved to the United States more than a decade ago after briefly living in Russia's volatile southern region of Dagestan.

Instead, he and Obama made positive statements about cooperation on counterterrorism in a phone conversation on Friday, suggesting both sides see an opportunity to improve strained relations between their countries.

China criticizes US for its human rights record

BEIJING (AP) — China slammed the human rights record of the United States in response to Washington's report on rights around the world, saying that U.S. military operations have infringed on rights abroad and that political donations at home have thwarted the country's democracy.

The report released Sunday in China — which defines human rights primarily in terms of improving living conditions for its 1.3 billion people— also cited gun violence in the U.S. among its examples of human rights violations, saying it was a serious threat to the lives and safety of America's citizens.

The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2012 said the U.S. government continues to strengthen the monitoring of its people and that political donations to election campaigns have undue influence on U.S. policy.

"American citizens do not enjoy a genuinely equal right to vote," the report said, citing a decreased turnout in the 2012 presidential election and a voting rate of 57.5 percent.

The report from the information office of the State Council, or China's Cabinet, which mostly cited media reports, said there was serious sex, racial and religious discrimination in the U.S. and that the country had seriously infringed on the human rights of other nations through its military operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.

The U.S.'s annual global human rights report issued Friday by the State Department said China had imposed new registration requirements to prevent groups from emerging that might challenge government authority. It said Chinese government efforts to silence and intimidate political activists and public interest lawyers continued to increase, and that authorities use extralegal measures such as enforced disappearance to prevent the public voicing of independent opinions.

It also said there was discrimination against women, minorities and people with disabilities, and people trafficking, the use of forced labor, forced sterilization and widespread corruption.

China's authoritarian government maintains strict controls over free speech, religion and political activity — restrictions that the U.S. considers human rights violations.

Purported Aunt of Boston Bombing Suspects Gets Into Fiery Exchange With TheBlaze’s Buck Sexton

Purported Aunt of Boston Bombers Maret Tsarnaeva Calls TheBlaze Radios Buck SextonMaret Tsarnaeva

Maret Tsarnaeva, an aunt of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, told reporters Friday that she didn't believe her nephews were capable of the crimes they were being accused of. But more than that, she alleged a conspiracy is at play, and demanded proof that 26-year-old Tamerlan and 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaevaren't being framed.

"I do not believe, I just do not believe our boys would do that ... I don't know them in the way that they could be capable of this," sheremarked.

On Saturday, a woman identifying herself asMaret Tsarnaeva made an unscheduled phone call to Buck Sexton on TheBlaze radio network to explain her statements.

"I understand...most of them probably hate me by now because some people, you know, feel like this could be true about what's said about my nephews," she began, the emotion clear in her voice. "Some people are sympathetic, and [have] doubts that this could be true. I just want to share how I feel about this, and what I think about this."

"My dear fellows, I respect people of all religions, I respect people of all ethnicities, I respect people of all colors -- it just -- two boys that have been claimed terrorists, that have been accused of committing these atrocities on the streets of Boston, they are not who -- " she said, before Sexton interrupted.

"I have to ask you, you have doubts about the guilt of your two nephews, is that what you're telling me now?" Sexton asked.

"It's not even doubts," the woman responded. "I strongly believe these boys are innocent."

She inquired: "If that happened, why don't we have any materials that can be shown to people? Where are they? All I hear on the public TV is, you know, these officials said this. Those officials said that..."

Sexton interrupted:

"We have surveillance footage. We have the dead body of one of your nephews who was in a shootout with police. He had an IED strapped to his chest. Ms. Tsarnaev...they are accused of killing an 8-year-old boy. You have got to be kidding me....180 people...You know what? You've made -- your case is nonsense. I can't take it. They are going to face the full weight of justice. You called in, you had your say, we know what's happening now, and I'm sorry but I can't take it anymore. Two terrorists. One down, one to go.

And at that, Sexton cut to a commercial.

Listen to the audio below (skip to around 3:30 for discussed comments) here.

Reflecting after the interview, Sexton said it wasn't his intention to "yell" at the woman, and that it's important to treat everyone with respect.

"I understand on the one hand, this woman -- she's in shock. She's in denial, and what I think it's obvious -- what her nephews did is so inhuman and evil. She's clearly a shattered woman, and the Christian side of me...wants to help somebody like that," he said. "But the Buck Sexton side of me wants to say, we can't allow evil to go unpunished. We can't allow people to hide the truth. That was hard. And I listened to clips and just so you know -- we did our best to make sure that wasn't some kind of a prank. I think you could hear the pain in her voice. And I -- I wasn't trying to add to that. I actually wanted to have an honest discussion...But I can't sit here and talk to her and tell me that at this point we don't know what those two young men did."

Listen to the entire Buck Sexton show, and the rest of Sexton's explanation, below (skip to around 1:45) here.

Horrific New Info on How Boston Suspect Drove Over Older Brother in Midnight Escape

Police Chief Edward Deveau: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Drove Over Brother Tamerlan to EscapeTsarnaev brothers

The Boston Globe reported Friday afternoon that 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev "ran over his own wounded brother [Tamerlan Tsarnaev] as he fled police" Thursday night.

Both brothers are suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing that saw three killed and more than 180 injured.

But on Saturday, Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau gave more shocking details from the violent scene to CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

"We estimate there was over 200 shots fired in a five- to 10-minute period," Deveau said. The brothers were throwing improvised explosives like those that detonated at the marathon, and "came out shooting -- shooting guns, handguns."

He relayed the horrific scene where Dzhokhar allegedly drove over his older brother:

"[Tamerlan] all of a sudden comes out from under cover and just starts walking down the street, shooting at our police officers, trying to get closer," Deveau said. "Now, my closest officer is five to 10 feet away, and they're exchanging gunfire between them. And he runs out of ammunition -- the bad guy -- and so one of my police officers comes off the side and tackles him in the street.

"We're trying to get him handcuffed. There's two or three police officers handcuffing him in the street -- the older brother. At the same time, at the last minute -- they obviously have tunnel vision, it's a very, very stressful situation -- one of them yells out, 'Look out!' and here comes the black SUV, the carjacked car, directly at them. They dive out of the way, and he (the younger brother) drives over his brother and drags him a short distance down the street." [Emphasis added]

Watch the entire interview with Wolf Blitzer, courtesy of CNN, here.

Dr. David Schoenfeld said 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev had so many penetrating wounds when he arrived at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center early Friday that it isn't clear which ones killed him, and a medical examiner will have to determine the cause of death.

Doctors pronounced him dead after 15 minutes of unsuccessful treatment.

Dzhokhar was captured alive in Watertown Friday night after a day-long manhunt that essentially shut down the city. He is under heavy guard at the hospital, and is reportedly in serious but stable condition.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
